To go with Garry's Whirlwind

Post by thehappyotter »

I was reading a book at work earlier and found these few photos in it which may be of intrest, the first one especially.

It caught my eye as it looks to contain a BEA Whirlwind which was being used by the Nottingham City Police for a training exercise. They were teaching the dogs to do such tasks as "Tracking enemy parachutists" as well as tracking a radio van in a mock atomic explosion situation.

Have a click on the full page thumbs and read through, I found it quite intresting and hope you will too.

These few show the people, and dogs.

Hi Rob

Very Interesring

In those days it was the BEA Helicopter Experimental unit.

They were finding out what uses helicopter could be put to.

The result was they had a go at just about anything from crop spraying to airline routes.

There seems no end of interesting titbit's turning up

Thanks for these.

I have done some research

Looking at the main pic the name appears to end in an 'L' making it G-AOCF "Sir Lionel".....well the letter doesn't look like an 'R' "Sir Ector" or a 'Y' "Sir Kay"

A search on G-AOCF/Nottingham/Police produced this long history of CD/Police use of Helicopters

Check out page 35

Ahead of the open door is a letter undoubtedly the 'C' of "CIVIL DEFENCE"...again seeming to confirm G-AOCF
