Catalina recommendations please

Post by Paul K »

I'm looking for decent Consolidated PBY Catalina, ( pay or free, doesn't matter) and I was wondering if anybody here can recommend one. The Alphasim package looks very good, but are there others I should consider ?

Thanks for any help, as ever.

Hi Paul,

The only recent one I have any experience of is the Alpha model and I was a little disappointed. Panel is typical 'old school' Alphasim and the model itself looks rather more like a plastic kit than a representation of the real thing. That said.. I'm glad I bought it and still take it out for the odd bash every now and again  Two versions are included (with and without land bits.. main gear) and importantly (for me).. an RAF paint comes with the pack

Catalina

Paul,

I fly Mike Stone's Catalina. It performs well and there are two good repaints available, an RAF camo and a white Canso scheme

The plane is available on Mike Stones website http://www.pmstone.com and the repaints on Flightsim

Degsy

I'd concur with Degsy's recommendation (although I do have the Alphasim version as well). As well as downloading the basic model (or models, as Mike has included some alternative versions, look in the model folder) look out ofr Bob Chicilo's FD update at Simviation.

I really must get around to doing the repaint of the Duxford Cat!!!

The Aerosoft will be for FSX only :crying: , so Alphasim is the only choice for FS9 in my book.

Thanks for all the help, chaps.

DaveB, I'm a bit disappointed too, as I was rather banking on the Alphasim one. I'll bear what you say in mind, and scrutinize the screenies a bit more. Thing is, my eagerness to have a Cat may well pursuade me to make allowances.

Degsy, AndyG; got Mike Stone's one and installed it. I seem to remember seeing that update, so I'll get it and see what the end result looks like.

AlexP; had a look at the Aerosoft one, I'm sure there's something not quite right with it. Okay its WIP, but the cockpit glazing frames seem far too spindly, and the windscreen panels are too big from top to bottom. Its a bit academic in my case as its purely FSX, but thats definitely not right. :k:

All in all, I think it will be the Alphasim one, with Dave's reservations accepted. Once more, thanks very much for all your responses.

Pah, this is no good at all. I know which Catalina is best, but every time I go to Alphasim I want to buy all sorts and can't decide. I hate having to make decisions. :doho:

There's an excellent panel (pby5kmpn.zip) by Ken Mitchell for Mike Stone's Catalina at http://www.flightsim.com. It includes separate navigator and engineer panels.[/url]
