I know there must be lots of guides out there but I stumbled on this and it looks very clear and concise. I've not tried it yet but probably will do once I have everything back up and running.

This point is incorrect; comparing a computer game to PAL video is a complete and utter waste of time. Due to the amount of blur on a regular TV screen or movie screen anything as low as 18fps can be seen as smooth; but I bet most of us can tell the difference between 25 and 50 and 100 fps in a computer game. I always find limited the fps to anything as low as 25 can be detrimental to the game and I'd sooner loose visual quality over smoothness.10. Lock your FPS to 25 - seriously, you won't notice anything higher and it really does help. At the worst set it to 30FPS, but I never run it that fast, because PAL video runs at 25FPS and 3.5 billion people can't be wrong eh? Movies in the cinema run even slower.
Just my 2p's worth. I've lost count of how many times I've seen the myth about not being able to see more than 25fps trotted out.

I'd tend to be in agreement with that Chris. Things have moved on a little and the bottlenecks have also moved making any framerate locking counter productive.. especially with the 9.1 patch.
I noticed only yesterday that FSX loads with a default fps of 15!! (at least it did on my system) It ran like a complete dog until I changed it to 30fps (as recommended by Horizon) and it now runs at least as well as 9.1.. smoother by and large and I've since upped the fps to 40. However, adding autogen reduces this down to a low of around 12-15 but that's another story

Old sailors never die.. they just smell that way!
Since the VFR/GM photo scenery came out for FS9 some years ago, the recommended position for the frame rate slider has been as far to the right as possible. The slider title then says 'Unlimited' or 'Automatic' or something similar, and it works a treat.
Sort of like driving a car with an auto-box, stick in in 'D'd and let it do it's thing....
