I hope you don't mind me posting some of todays ride in your thread, I don't really see the need in starting another.

On seeing yours I decided to go and get filthy by the weir. The river is still very high and there's lots of glorious mud to ride in.

This is one of the little ponds down by the river, used to come and camp down here as a teenager, drink loads of beer and attempt to catch fish. Never did catch many but it usually ended up with one of us being thrown in.

Image

It looks nice and tame from the top but at this time of year falling in here would probably kill you if you're not a strong swimmer.

Image

These boats have been here for as long as I can remember, they sometimes go away in summer and come back painted a different colour.

Image

The cliffs, used to make some amazing dens as kids in here. One had a fixed barbeque and we had the police helicopter hover around us for ages wondering what all the smoke was.

Image

Water is right up to the top of the concrete block, a month or so ago it was over it but I didn't have my camera.

Image

The weir is made up of 3 or 4 steps which you can usually see under the water. In summer months i've watched my friends walk over the river on the top of the weir. The people living in those boats must really trust their knots...

Image

To the right of this photo, along the bottom of the cliff, there is actually a footpath buried under there somewhere. Wouldn't want to try and walk down there now.

Image

Another view of the crazy boat people.

Image

In summer the track through this pond is a footpath, this is one of the overflow ponds for when the river floods. As you can see, it's flooded.

Image

The lambs have been born, they made so much noise I could hear it above my ipod.

Image

Can't make a post like this without a photo of my bike can I!!!

Image

These last few might not be of intrest to everyone but they are of something I am extremely proud off.

In my village, as a teenager, you tend to belong to one of two groups. You either hang around on the streets drinking and smoking drugs or you get a bike/skateboard and hang around the skatepark.

I've been involved in this project for over a decade, building it ourselves with little support (initially) from the council or the local residents who were concerned it would attract crime.

As an old man now i'm to old to ride my little bike often but must admit to playing on the ramps every now and again in summer.

I'm still very involved on the committee and hope that i'll be able to influence a few more generations of youths to put their energy into this place and not into anti-social behaviour and crime. I'm convinced this place went a long way to making me and my friends decent respectable adults.

A number of the ramps were payed for by the parents of a little lad who was tragically killed down here. The support of his parents has been amazing, rest in peace little dude.

Hope you enjoy my few little pics.

Between you and Ian , Rob youve made me quite homesick - its funny the thing about Skaters/BMX kids here - they look really odd in the choice of clothing (plus all the girls want to look like Avril Lavigne) - But they are actually good kids - they just look a little menacing - on the other hand the dumb little (dont get me started) druggies who inhaling everything and anything or stealing Mummys presctiptions have neither the inclination or stamina to do the stuff on the half pipe that the skaterkids do

Nice job Mate - didnt mean to go off at a tangent there

Lambs and spring - something so English about it

Ah the red cliffs along the river that give Radcliffe-on-Trent its name.

Solid red clay - not ideal gardening material.

It always surprises me how few British people realise what lovely countryside they have. :dunno:

But I suppose in a way it's a blessing as it means it's not too crowded.

Reminds me of years ago with the "Come away to England" campaign to get people to turn off the motorways and discover the countryside.

Thanks guys for such beautiful pics that show there is still peace, tranquility and sheer beauty outside of the concrete jungle

You're right about how some look a bit scary Leif, I never got into dressing up all silly and certainaly never wanted to look like Avril...

I do however still have a bit of a 'skater' style in the way I dress, even now. I still get old ladys cross the road clutching their handbags and I can't see me robbing them somehow can you...

The problem we have round here is that a massive percentage of the residents are elderley and just seem to see a younger person and automaticaly think they are a nasty mugger. Very closed minded. I can remember a meting we had with the council (again, all village elders) about a new extension to the park and the only arguement they seemed to be able to come up with was that they didn't want loads of yobs coming down with crowbars!! How random and completely rubbish.

Fill your boots, Rob - this format was your idea in the first place! You've got some cracking photos there, I can imagine how much fun you had. You do realise that we've got to go out and do it all again when the trees are in leaf, because it will all look totally different! What a hardship that will be!

I was a bit dubious about this sort of post on the forum but the response has shown that it is very popular. I've realised that it's not that far off topic as the countryside is as Classic British as you can get and is probably why we all appreciate it. I don't think anybody would mind if everybody who has the opportunity took a camera out every so often to show us different areas of the Country. As you all know, I spent much of my adult life travelling the World and I've never considered for a moment living anywhere other than in the English countryside. The World is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there

Here's somewhere slightly different. The classic Wiltshire landscape of the plateau of Salisbury plain. Big 360 degree horizons which are unusual in the South. This is not far from Stonehenge. Of course, originally, this would have been thick woodland but it was all cleared thousands of years ago by hand when men turned from hunting to agriculture.

Image

Rob - your skatepark looks magnificent. What a fantastic project! Cyberbrat is a 15 year old skater/bmxer so I understand what you're saying. He and his mates will go out all day on the train to Bath, Bristol or Newport with their boards, backpacks and mp3s and you couldn't wish that they were doing anything else. I took a load of them to NASS last year. It's a 2 day outdoor extreme sports show at the Bath and West showground. Imagine the testosterone of 20,000 teenage boys camping out and going wild for the weekend. I was so impressed. They were passionate about their sport and about music and about their mates. Nobody was drunk, nobody was smoking and nobody was being aggressive - they were just having fun. Imagine 20,000 adults in the same situation and you'd need the riot police within 20 minutes!
