Download speeds?

Post by airbee »

Just checking in case I need to take action. What speeds do you get?

I have a Wanadoo digital phone line connection rated at 8mbs but on many sites I dont seem to d/l at better than 50kbs and overall may average in the 75 - 120 range.
Was just on Avsim (HMS Ark Royal) and d/l at 45kbs. This may well be a restriction thing by Avsim - after all their d/l are .free - and a real service to us all!
As a non expert, just seeking a bit of feedback before jumpng the gun. Thks

On my 4Mb cable connection I download at speeds of around 450 KB/s. Of course, it's dependant on the uploading site. Avsim.com and Flightsim.com are both slow to non-paying members.

Try the speed test here:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h. ... dtest.html

See what that gives. But ADSL speeds quoted are maximum, not guaranteed!

Hello matey,

I have a 2mb BT service and I can usually guarantee at least 112+ kbs off flightsim.com. When downloading off here, I see around 225kbs  Off Avsim, pretty much what you're seeing. In fact, I've found AVSIM so poor over the last few weeks.. I'll spend time searching for what I want elsewhere or wait until I know it's available on another site. UKMIL is always quite slow.. CBF slightly better

Bottom line.. AVSIM=SLOW.. Flightsim.com=Fast

Hi James, thnks for that. It tells me like all the other testers that that I'm like greased lightning - something not replicated anywhere else more useful at the moment - mores the pity. I've got one of them WiFi modem dubries round someplace, I suppose I might look at plugging that in.

225kbs, DaveB! Cor! Why dont we move all the files over here then..
On a happy note I was very pleased with the 'Ark Royal' d/l well done to all involved i reckon. I've already passed it on to an old chum who used to fly Sea Vixens in those far off days of yore. Be interested in his reaction.

I've found it to be completely the opposite! Flightsim has never been fast for me, yet AVSIM peaks when less users are on (i.e. when the Americans are in bed). I can get a very good download rate from AVSIM, and it's my download site of choice.

CBFiles is usually pretty good.

Avsim does vary a lot but generally I find it a lot slower than it was.

Could be that the traffic is now typically much heavier :dunno:

To my knowledge Avsim have not had a major server upgrade for a couple of years, the cost of running the hosting service is huge, maybe another upgrade is not cost effective.

You'll find we are pretty similar to Avsim with certain times of day being faster than others.

Because of the cost of hosting in the UK and the fact I refuse to have adverts or pay for membership the servers have had to be hosted in America.

It should be quicker when they are in bed, I don't have a problem with download accelerators though, if you get 4 simultaneous connections it can really speed things up at peak times.

Thks for the input folks. Pinned my provider down since, but with usual middling responses. On further advices, however have now installed the WiFi modem leading to, what appears anyway, an overall improved D/L performance.

By way of round out I offer the following. 1. Just before changing the modem, I went to FsNordic.net for a scenery file and recorded a D/L speed of 642kbs! It was late tho'. Avsim steady at 51kbs..
2. In the course of my very small research came across a couple of useful things/sites which may be useful to someone so I pass on.-
http://www.speedguide.net/index.php - full of useful net and broadband utils/info. The TCP connection Optimiser - on the left hand shortcut menu has proved a very useful little widget. Another was - ]http://www.testmy.net
Found an excellent free line tester/ meter at - http://www.tcpiq.com provides an ongoing historical record of yr connection performance plus more.
- Finally, A quick UK provider comparison page - [url]http://www.futureinsites.co.uk/broadban ... arison.htm[/url
