A Costly Big Brother!

The problem with this government is that they have been in power for too long and now believe think that they can just do as they wish regardless of what the people of this country (that they are supposed to represent) think.

Take Lincolnshire for example and the rurality of it. There are many people living in areas where public transport does not exist to the extent of a regular service, these residents may only be earning a minimum wage or even on pensions and therefore rely on their cars not for pleasure but as a means of essential transport.

Many may be seriously disabled or chronically sick and unable to work due to their conditions and rely on a car to get around equally, those who work unsociable hours where public transport does not run will also be hit.

Has Blair ever thought of these people and their circumstances? You can bet your life he hasn't and probably doesn't give a toss as these are only in the minority as far as he is concerned.

Once again, this so called New Labour Government has shown contempt in its attitude towards the electorate.

Well, I ony hope that the electorate will show its contempt to this shameful government when it comes to the next election!!!!!

Sorry for the rant but as far as Labour and its' policies go they just want to make me :sicky:

Edinburgh tried this 2 years ago and the city fathers decided to ask the voters. The whole idea was rejected in the referendum by a vote of 3 to 1. And all the time the city smuggies were telling the world how the people were behind them!

Personally I thinke we pay more than enough tax on our personal transport. Lets face it, if the money raised by Road Tax, Fuel Tax, the tax on insurance, MoT Fees etc were actually put into the road network we would have the best system in the universe.

Taxing us more is seen as the easy action - after all the MPs have to find a way of justifying their expenses. Anyone see the news article on how much each MP claimed in travel expenses? Particular favourite of mine was the Lib Dem Environmental spokesbody who claimed 13 grand in car mileage when he lived on a direct half hour rail link to central London. Suppose it was too much to expect that he actually practised being 'environmentally friendly' himself. Might have had to share a seat with one of the voters -Ugh how awful!

Agreed...I do wish the Tories would make some move to "Court the Motorists"...They are not an insignificant minority like many others who have been bullied by this government...They are a very powerful majority and could quite easily bring down a government.

Just promise them a reduction in Fuel Duty and Road Tax and they will vote in their millions...Come on you dozy Tories, Get on with it! You are missing a fine opportunity.

I suspect at the moment Peter that would look like hyprocracy what with Cameron's green image he's trying to cultivate.

That said, as an engineer in power generation I am accutely aware of environmental issues, what can be done about them and the fact that the demand for transportation and energy isnt going to go down. Its a tough balancing act but Blair's idea isnt the solution.

Did anyone see the Trevor McDoughnut prog last night on this very subject??

They had this knobber on (pro the scheme of course and one of the government advisers.. also someone who uses public transport!!!) who was claiming something like a 44% reduction in road use if the scheme is introduced and he couldn't understand why his captive audience didn't want to pay for that :shock: Where the hell he pulled that figure from I really don't know but it begs the reasoning, how are we going to get the reduction by paying extra :think: If its that good, wouldn't everyone pay extra and in doing so, there won't BE a reduction

If it were in place of tax on petrol and road tax, it might be worth looking at but neither of these important sources of revenue are being dropped. What happens if you drive on the M6Toll under this scheme?? Will we be paying 4x to use it.. fuel tax, road tax, toll for using the road plus this new road useage tax!!
