I used Beta Builder by Airfix to make building but other than than Meccano was my thing.
Making Bridges and cranes.
Like Leif I found it useful to understand the basics of tool use and the importance of making sure your nuts don't work loose

Well, if Tonks fancies a challenge - how about this kit?

It's already been started.

Impressive though the Falcon is if I where to choose just one (and at these prices it would have to be just one) it would be the rebel blockade runner. It looks the absolute business.
However the website lists it as not being available in this country.

Although I suspect this may actually be because it’s perhaps no longer in production.
Surely therefore, the only sensible course of action is to get this:
http://shop.lego.com/Product/?p=10030
Which comes with its own (mini) blockade runner, just what you need for re-enacting the opening scenes of A New Hope. :axe:

Tonks, just out of interest, how long did it take you to build your blockade runner?
