I seem to remember the Mallard being at a railway museum in (or near) Clapham (?) at around that time. I also remember with joy finding out that the old machines for issuing platform tickets actually worked! Other than that, I can recall very little of that visit. Well, it was over ** years' ago!

She sure is a looker, Stanier knew his stuff allright!
Allthough I prefer the looks of the less streamlined versions aka Union of South Africa.

Sorry to say but you got the designer wrong there, in fact Stanier was the rival of he man who designed The A4's, Sir Nigel Gresley. And while i am correcting a load of aviation enthusiasts calling an engine THE Mallard or THE Flying Scotsman sounds horribly wrong and you rarely hear enthusiasts using a 'the' in front of a name.

I'll admit that i am interested in both areas, mainly as my Dad grew up in Eastleigh near the railway and under the airport flightpath. Even now he says that Bristol Freighters seemed to fly really really low over their house.

Both the LNER (Gresley) and the LMS (Stanier) purpose built their streamliners, but i think the GWR just messed around with streamlining one of their current engines to say that they had a streamliner too, don't think it was particularly succesful anyway.

Arrrgh. your right, got mixed up.
Thought about streamlining and then typed in the wrong name. Stanier's Princess Coronation's were streamlined for a while though

I went to Yorkshire for a dirty weekend with a stewardess once and as her flight was a day late  I spent my pent-up energy at the Rail Museum! I'm not a spotter, but as I grew up with steam I've always had a soft spot for it so I think it's time I went back to York for another look. I can give it my full attention this time!

Working on the railways still gives plenty of opportunities to see working steam. Funnily enough when I arrived at Westbury station for work yesterday, not 20 yards from where I parked was Merchant Navy Class 'Clan Line' taking on water and coal and looking immaculate and gorgeous. I didn't even bother taking a photo as steam is quite regular at Westbury. Lucky me!

I'm not too bothered about diesels but there are still a lot of 31s, 37s, Deltics et al working. You see a lot hauling freight around Southampton or tourist specials through Bath and Bristol. And there's a network rail engineering train with Deltics at both ends.

All the BR Deltics were taken out of service and except for the NRM example and maybe the Science Museum? [not sure about that] and the odd privately owned one they were all scrapped. Or so we were told at the time. Strategic Reserve? .
I can assure you there are non left working today. If there are any in storage they are well hidden away in a very inaccessable place. Along with the best examples of steam power.
