I've never had a zero but have had many times in gusty conditions were I have gone from well below max to overspeed suddenly and back again when the airspeed suddenly changes by up to 80 knots or more.

Yup.. that too mate. When the 'phenomina' happens, it generally goes to 0.0 kts (if you use shift+Z). Had a C1K end up pointing toward Canada on one occassion and where was I heading.. ASI!!!
I was flying again last night on the first leg of my European Tour (Bournemouth to Amsterdam) when i deliberately left the pitot heating off. About 2 minutes after take-off, the speed suddenly indicated zero. Switched on pitot heating, back came the airspeed!
That can be both the cause and the cure as I've had instances where the pitot heaters have been switched on.. I've had the overspeed caused by ActiveSky.. and have switched the pitot's off and back on again and the ASI has reset. I'm afraid it's one of those very grey areas where you can still get caught out regardless of what you've done
As DM suggested earlier, with the variation in switch positions between the BEA fit and the rest of the world.. should you go from one to the other, make sure you see a voltage when the pitot's are turned on and you know you're in business.. regardless of panel
Oh well, it's as real as it gets plus or minus a bit allowing for the limitations of the technology.
I've got a ride in a 737 simulator at the end of the month - guess I'll have to see if you get the same problems on real simulators (err, "real simulators" isn't that a bit tortological???)
I think the speed drop is a glitch deep inside FS9.
On my sim everything is default except for some planes. So I tried with the default 737-400, take-off in Seattle. Pitot heat and anti-ice on, and when passing 4200 ft the airspeed goes to Zero to come back at 5100 ft.
I experienced the same problem at different altitudes, but only with the weather theme set to "heavy snows"!
