VFR scenery

Post by fighterpilot »

Hi Everybody,

I recently bought FS2004 after using FS2002 for a while and i was wondering about VFR scenery, It Looks great, much better than the default is there a peformance issue with it? I assume they come complete with meshes? Where can I get them from?

Sorry for the ridiculous questions its just that i am relativley new to the Flightsim series but have spent too many years with all varieties of the CFS series and other combat sims

Thanks
Richard

As an owner of vfr scenery in fs 2004 i can say it doesn't come with meshes but it is good. It does however get rid of autogen trees and things but theors plenty of add ons out there which use vfr.

Make sure you fs can run at high settings smootly as i found to get vfr looking as it does on the box i had to put my terrain texture up to high (it think but it was worth it)

There is also freeware meshes and also vfr terrain. just ask around on here for best add ons to use.
i picked up the part one of the dvd version of vef for £17.99 from play.com which has free p and p as well as stocking part 2 dvd version

Hope this was some help to you

Thanks for the help, I may have to think about getting one of them. The reason i asked about meshes is because i have been having problems finding a decent one, i find some airports are alot higher than the surrounding terrain with cliffs all around them, Aldergrove being the most prominent i have been to so far.

vfr terrain

Post by dswanson »

Hi,

The UK VFR scenery sets do come with bits of mesh but for best all round coverage of England & Wales get the VFR Terrain product. As ever there are some height anomalies but the effects in mountainous areas such as the Lakes and Snowdonia are very realistic

The problem with airports being on flat areas with cliffs around them (or sunken in holes) is not really the fault of the mesh, but due to the fact the airport is set to the height of the default mesh, which is incorrect.

I don't think that's strictly correct, Dave.

My understanding is that the airport heights are actually set to published data. The problem arises where the published data and the terrain data don't quite match each other. This is particularly relevant in the US, where the height and location of a small airfield can be given by the operator of the airfield, and in the days before GPS was readily available, that could be little more than a best guess.

Hi,

Is there no way of altering an airport's altitude to match whatever scenery one happens to be using?

Oh, yes.

AFCAD.exe open any airport.bgl right click anywhere on the background select properties, and there you go.

Mind you that you have to know the surrounding area heights I have once or twice re-altered an airport under ground-level, an thus made it invisible!...;-)

Thanks for all th tips guys, however i was wondering about the version i should get here: http://www.play.com/Games/PC/6-/Search. ... chsource=0

it says that:
VFR Photographic Scenery 1: Southern England & South Wales (Add On For Flight Sim X)

Is this the FS2004 version?

The odd problem i have with the scenery around Aldergrove is that the land is lower than the water giving odd looking raised lakes, i am about to try another mesh to see if it improves things.
