No.......it's been like this for about thirty.
Perhaps you didn't notice.............but you can go anywhere and be alone

I've been in london today actually at the RAeS library!
The driving around herts bit isn't an option I'm afraid as I don't have a car down here. As for the airfield: part of it it is now the deHavilland Campus- I dont have any lectures over there as its all business studies etc. Was tempted by the nicer accomodation over there (they don't have any hills to walk up either!) but the bars are both on this one  and its only 5 mins to get to lectures
There is also a big shopping centre which I think would be just outside the airfield but may be wrong which has a full size replica comet (nice- but I'd rather have the airfield!)

The Galleria is built over the A1 which was put through a tunnel under Hatfield during the early to mid eighties. A very bizzare looking hotel used to stand in its place before that was demolished along with four blocks of art deco flats opposite the DH/HSA/BAe admin and design buildings so the tunnel could be built. The shopping centre and the smaller modern redbrick flats were then built on the roof of the tunnel.
I think the Comet model in there is a new one, there was a similar one on a pole outside the Comet Hotel (now known as the Ramada Jarvis) for years and I think this is the one in store at the DH museum at London Colney. The DH site itself at its height was bounded by St Albans Road West and Comet Way on the east side, Manor road (now largely replaced by Hatfield Avenue) to the north, Coopers Green Lane to the west and the greenhouses off Oaklands Lane to the South/west.

I think the board next to the comet at the DH museum said it had been a film prop or something similar at some point. The hotel now has a small model comet outside.
I'll have to do some exploring round there some time as apart from a couple of trips to the galleria I don't really know much beyond that end of college lane apart from how to find asda.
