A standing wave (with lenticulars) along the Eastern edge of the Sierra Nevadas photographed this morning enroute to Nellis AFBs Open house

To give some perspective - the first ridge line in the lower left side of the photo is approximatly 45 miles away

Its the pure size of things that gets you - LSV was reporting 18000 OVC when that shot was taken - the Wave streched back to somewhere around Coaldale 350 nm away - we are gifted with some incredible weather photo oppurtunities here, Especially when the weather is coming from the NW. We have some shots of the Nellis Airshow including some of one of the only two Fairey Fireflies left flying , in formation with a prestine Sea Fury in RAN Colours - I'll post them as soon as I can clean them up a bit

Oh to go to Nellis open day. Passed through Las Vegas at the same time as an open day - no chance of finding anywhere to stay so missed out on that :sad:

leif - a striking photograph of a striking phenomenon . Vegas is almost ,but not quite, correct about its not occurring in the UK - you can occasionally see lenticular formations associated with wave coming off the Welsh mountains in a strong south westerly, but it doesn't happen more than about once in 2 years in my experience, and I believe the Grampians occasionally produce it also, although I haven't seen it myself

Vegas - I'm on the Wirral and we are rather well placed to see this . You may be interested to know that the same winds very occasionally produce rotor, which looks very spectacular and which I would not want to tangle with. I did photo one about 15 years ago but I cannot now find the photo

Sorry but have to disagree totally - lenticular formations are very common in all parts of the UK - I have even seen them and flown the associated 'wave lift' in my glider in Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire, as well as other more hilly and mountaionous areas of England.

ps. take a look over at http://www.virtualsoaring.org/goto.html - might convince you otherwise about having lenticulars in fs9
