What immediately meets the eye is that lack of enough memory. 512mb is a very small amount. You won't have to install many add-ons before your computer is worn out.

A 1. GHz CPU isn't especially big either.

Your HDD is very small compared to today's standard.

A Radeon 9600 is a low end card as well.

I must say that I'm surprised FS actually starts.

All-in-all I'm sad to say that I would begin to start saving up for a completely new rig.

Sorry.

Hmn, I'm not as pessimistic. I ran FS9 on a similar level PC for quite a while, and also on a laptop with a lot worse spec as well.

From the spec I'm assuming you have FS9 loaded in the main C: drive, yes? To my mind that's potential sim suicide and since FS98 days I've loaded mine in a separate partition. This means that if the OS goes TU you can at least save the FS files if you have to reformat the C: drive. It's easier to find the various FS bits as well.

For some time I've done a cold install of FS, then before adding ANY add-ons I copy the whole shooting match to another partition, called FS Backup or similar. Then if all else fails you have a plain vanilla copy sitting there ready to be copied iacross f the fs9.exe file or other gets corrupted.

I'm sure a re-install wouldn't go amiss under your present circumstances, but make sure you copy the aircraft, gauges, effects etc folders first, then you won't lose all the add-ons. Also copy the scenery.cfg file as well, that saves re-installing all the scenery. After you'd done the re-install copy them all back again.

Remember that FS9 saves some files to ridiculous places on the system too. All the entries in 'My Flights' are in the 'My Documents' folder, no matter where you install the sim itself, and the fs9.cfg file is in the C:\Documents and Settings\Present user\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9 folder together with some other files. No, I have NO idea why those clowns at M$ did that......... <sigh>

Another thing, when was the last time you defragged the drive?

Hope some of that's helpful.

Snap! I've got an FS9 to desktop prob too. Mine is processor overheat; Pentiums are non suicidal (get to hot, then dump for something less hard work). Not sure if its the same with AMD. I can only run by using a bit of software called Speedfan which monitors temps and keeps the fans running at higher speeds.

Am also putting as much work as I can on to my graphics card but its only 128 Nvidia 5200fx, but it helps.

Do a search for speedfan, website is almico (I think)

I have something called cool and quiet that monitors temp.

It was said to be essential with the CPU load of frequent prolonged FS use to have this with the package.

Well I don't know but I have not had this problem.

Good afternoon guys.Thank you for the varied replies...if I may ask Dan K what do you recommend i purchase to bring my pc up to speed for fs 9? I would like to tell you that it starts fine, graphics are good, scenery is sharp...it only stutters with over populated ai at add on airfields, this is when most crashes occur!!!

Hi 2pac

AI is a killer..may I suggest that first you try turning off AI (Traffic)to see if it makes any difference....

And if it did make a difference you can then gradually increase the AI traffic until you find that sweet spot between smooth running and some AI in the sim. I think that a large airport (EGLL, for example) and lot of AI will effect all but a PC with top drawer specs.
