Interesting comment in the article
"Although the aircraft is designed to fly on one engine in an emergency the pilot felt the damage should be checked out."
Having just taken off, would the plane do anything else but return? And the journey to Lanzarote does involve some time over the Atlantic Ocean!
And I see that today the centre of Manchester has a major fire - all happening there.

Mmm, roasted Heron for two. Some herbed potatoes, broiled asparagus, and a bottle of Chardonnay or Chenin Blanc would go nicely with that.

These things happen. I remember being at EGCC when a Monarch Airbus struck several crows during take off last year. Nothing that the Pilots SOP training does'nt cover I'm sure.
Meanwhile, back on the ground and closer to home, I struck a rather large and confused phesant doing approx 125mph on a training course last week. That that was'nt very pretty.. :sicky:

Depends on the situation
Tonks,
Since the pilot had shut down the engine, would continuing to Lanzarote have been sensible, or even permitted?

In Tonks Absence
Short answer NO.
regs say twin engine aircraft lose an engine LAND (actually the wording is
" at the nearset suitable airport"
Two herons???? Bet that wiped out ALL the stages - we took half a dozen
starling type birdies and removed 75% of the turbine blades on a JT8
expensive propostion - Airplane wins initially - but at a minimum of 1 Mill
per engine it - the birdies ulitmatly wind (even postumously)
god scuse the spelling - Im recovering from a 14 day marathon
