Determining Fuel Required

I am new and haven't flown a flight yet. I am trying to figure out how to determine the amount of fuel to load for a particular flight. I don't want to run out of fuel and I also don't want to have to much remaining. I will be flying the BAC-1-11 models and the VC-10's. Are there any charts or formula's out there that the rest of you use? Also, being the "yank" that I am, I am used to using pounds instead of kilos. Can I use pounds when loading up fuel or should I get used to the metric system and convert to kilos?

Hi Mark,

A bit rusty on the jets.. so much so that I almost have to relearn them each time I fly :lol: However, found this thread for the VC10's..

http://cbfsim.org/cb-bb/viewtopic.php?t=8038

Just lost the 1-11 thread so I'll finish here and get back :doh: You CAN use pounds with the 1-11 as DM left the pounds gauges in the cab. There is another thread for this somewhere so I'll seek that out for you :wink:

Note that the VC10 will flameout if you take the fuel much below 3000kgs. RW, you should be landing with around 7.5tonnes onboard :smile: Back in a while :wink:

Hi Mark,

Found the info for the gauges you need.

Go to the folder DMFS Shared Files and depending which panel you are using (510 which is BEA based or the others which are RotW based) then select either VC if you fly the VC model or NO VC if you dont. Open the panel.cfg file and look for the lines..

FUEL_FLOW_KGH_1
FUEL_FLOW_KGH_2
FUEL_LOAD_KG_C
FUEL_LOAD_KG_L
FUEL_LOAD_KG_R

and substitute these for..
FUEL_FLOW_PPH_1
FUEL_FLOW_PPH_2
FUEL_LOAD_LB_C
FUEL_LOAD_LB_L
FUEL_LOAD_LB_R

You will now have 2 fuelflow gauges that will read in PPH and 3 tank gauges that will read in pounds :wink: This mod will not change the gauges in VC, only in the 2D panel so I'll have a look to see how DM did those :wink:

EDIT..
If you DO use the VC model and wish to see the pounds gauges.. go back to the panel.cfg and look for the section [vcockpit02]. Once more, look for the 2 fuel flow and 3 fuel load lines and change them to the PPH and LB lines indicated above. You should now be fully sorted in 2D and VC panels :wink:

EDIT#2..
Mark.. if you use FSNavigator, you might find these figures useful. I can't vouch for their absolute accuracy but they should be in the ballpark.
[VA 111-400]
withoutash=1
climbspeed=245
climbfuel=4800
climbrate=1700
cruisespeed=310
cruisefuel=2530
cruisealtitude=25000
descentspeed=140
descentfuel=1000
descentrate=1800
fuelmeasure=2
revision=3

Best thing to do (as always) is to find a route you are going to fly and run it before you do it live. Also.. beware of the overheat lamps on the 1-11. You can delve into them briefly but fly with them lit for any extended period and you risk losing the engines. Selecting water injection means they won't be punished so hard or just pull the throttles back until the lamps extinguish. This isn't normally a lot and should not impede your takeoff run :wink:

I'll give it a try, thanks.

Hi Mark

The CBFS stats can give you a reasonable estimate for fuel use.

Take a look at the links at the top of the 'Stats, stats and more stats' thread in this forum section.
There's lots of data from several months of flying.

eg. Using 'CBFS Route Enquiry', select airport, aircraft type etc. and click the 'Display' button.
It displays all the routes available with CBFS.
Average flight time & fuel use is shown if anyone else has already flown it (yellow section).
If no one else has flown it yet, it gives an estimate of expected fuel use instead (if possible).
And it can display in 'kg' or 'lb' too. :smile:

Just add on a good safety margin & you should be ok.

Hi Mark,

Like me I am still trying to get to grips with the amount of fuel required for each flight, in fact on one I only just managed to land at Heathrow on air!! Not even enough for a go-around, another time I landed with too much.

You may find this link to be extremely helpful but not all routes have the fuel useage listed you can also change this chart from kg to lbs (Thanks to Dave M).

http://dmfly.cbfsim.org/CBFSOL_ROUTES_SQL.php

Also go to this link and you can download a free converter.

One day, just one day I might/will overcome this mind numbing hurdle!! :pray:

This works for me in the VC15:

6 tonnes per hour, and add 7 tonnes for div.

2 hours flight = 12+7=19 should do it, and if your unsure add a few tonnes more and take it to 20.

And don't use G-ASGK ;-)

:doh: Sorry Dave M, did not mean to tread on your toes, hadn't seen that you put the link in for the CBFs Route Enquiry for Mark. :redface:
