CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE FUN KIND

My neighbor came a calling to my neck of the woods. All kinds of military traffic and strange AC with funny antennae and things on the roof.

Condoleeza brought her own plane (looks like a B777, the one in the background).

Nice Pic there!

That would be a 757 in the background, or C-32 as the military version is known.

Cheers,

Yes, it's one of the C-32As (aka 757-200ER) in the background.

The only people authorized to use the aircraft on a regular basis are the Vice President, First Lady, & Secretary of State. Everyone else has to "make due" with a Gulfstream III, Gulfstream IV, or Gulfstream V.

Me thinks the PM should have a VC-10, a Trident or better yet a Comet (since they are home grown) refitted and upgraded for his official use. It would be very classy among all the later day Boings and Airbuses at the local UN show every so often. One of the reasons the US put down the B707 was passenger capacity (more press room), not mechanical mis-functions so one of the above would do nicely IMO.

Actually, very little of the press flies aboard any of the presidential aircraft. It's limited to 12-15 people most of the time. They typically fly on a chartered jet that is paid for by the news agencies together (I don't know how they divide it up). Most of the reason for changing from the 707 to the 747 was to give more room for meeting space, something that was lacking in the 707s. The radio equipment took up fully 1/3 of the available cabin space of the VC-137s, so there wasn't much room for meetings or other areas aboard the aircraft. If any of you get a chance to see the inside of one of the aircraft (one is at the Regan Memorial Library in California, the other is at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, OH with 3 previous presidential aircraft), it is a real eye-opener how little space there really was on the aircraft after all of the security and command/communication equipment was installed.
