Ethernet problem?

Odd one this...
I have a NVidia ethernet which is very good at shutting down the PC witha blue screen of death, apparently a common problem with Nforce moboard drivers. I tried new drivers but eventually got bored with an unstable connection so disabled the Nvidia ethernet and used the Marvell Yukon ethernet connection, a stable PC at last!! however now my Outlook Distress no longer gets my e-mail I get the unable to connect message. I know the ISP is working ok due to my laptop getting the info ok. It runs from the same router but in wirless mode! Any clues anyone?

Hi Tony... in a nutshell Firmware(BIOS) Have you updated the motherboard Bios to the latest version?
But... can you get internet contectivity on the iffy PC? If not, its not an outlook problem persay.

No the bios is the same everything works bar outlook distress, so I assume the bios is ok?

If there is a BIOS update available Tony, I'd apply it... but that will be unrelated to your outlook Problem. Generally they don't bring out BIOS updates unless there is something to fix, so if theres one available... they have found something that needed fixing (even if they don't say so)
Your outlook problem is almost certainly firewall or something similar. Are you getting emails coming in or is it not working in both directions?

I just had to send an e-mail via a web site it opened my send mail in outlook and sent it!! it seems recieving is the problem?

Ok... I'm assuming your ISp is using a POP3 mail server for inbound email. This will use (by default) port 110. Can you check the setting for your incoming mail server and ensure this is the case (just on the off chance) Another thing worth checking is that your username and password for logging onto your mail account are correct... might be worth re entering these. Othe than that, can I ask what firewall your using?

Ben this is the message I get

yes its 110 and the firewall is Windows XP plus the router /modem firewall which is a Linksys.
Just re entered my password etc but no luck, all the settings for outlook express are identiacl to my laptops settings.. weird this
just tried it with windows firewall off, no difference

first if you open a command prompt and type "ping mail.plus.net" (See below)
The time= and TTL may be different, but can you let me know if your getting a reply. Below is what I get when I do it on mine, which looks right.
C:\Users\ubaw01>ping mail.plus.net

Hi Ben
You may be deceived by the ping because you ping the dns-server...
You could be getting good pings and still be stopped by a FW....
I would investigate some more in the above two links, as it seems to be a known problem...
