How can one remove mesh chasms?

I cannot recall where I recently saw a file which purported to remove chasms where there are rivers in Fs9. While the chasms do make the course of rivers easy to see from the air they are somewhat unsightly and unrealistic. i also dimly recall that some of these chasms are 'shadows' caused by the systems used to produce the mesh.

Does anyone know of such a file please?

I use 'FS Global 2005' and 'Roads and Rivers of Europe.'

Don't know about the file but I found the following extract here

Hi Colin,

Interesting stuff that :wink: I have a similar problem (though not with rivers exactly) with the freeware Croydon scenery. It's sitting on UKVFR and UK Terrain (which I believe it is supposed to be compatible with) but the only things that remain correct are the runways and apron/hangar area. Wander off the runway or taxiway and you will (at certain points) quite literally fall down a huge hole :shock:
No idea what the actual problem is but it makes Croydon unusable. A shame as many of our VA routes would have used Croydon as a hub instead of Heathrow.

Hi DB,

Which Croydon scenery is that please? I wonder since you're OK on the runways etc whether it's AFCAD related?

If you could let me know the scenery I'll check it on my machine. I have UKVFR and Terrain (but not loaded at present) so I can do a bit of detective work if you like?

Feel free to PM to save diverting Hobby's thread any further :smile:

Hi Colin,

I believe Hobby would be interested in Croydon too so I'll continue here. I was certain this scenery was UKVFR compatible but can now find no reference or claim to this effect. It is the WWII RAF version by Gary Burns available off Allnodes as Croydon.zip. I'd chosen this one as it was easy on the frames (unlike the Croydon included in Vintage London Airports) but it seems VFR Terrain has done it no good at all I'm afraid.

By all means have a look and see what you think :wink:
EDIT
Further to the above, I've had another look at John M's Croydon and for whatever reason, it doesn't appear to be hitting my framerates half as much as it did. However, I seem to be missing a number of tree textures and this may have been the reason I gave up on it. Anything that says it requires 'outside' tree textures usually gets passed by.
This one doesn't have craters though.. I just wish it didn't use 3rd party trees either :roll:
Hobby Pop onto Allnodes and type Croydon into the search engine and you'll find a selection of 'Period' mp3 tracks to play while you're flying!! :wink:

I'll have a look and get back to you DB. I also passed the other one by as it needs a load of NOVA textures for the trees which aren't my favourite cup of tea :huf:

Gents,

Have been experimenting with Gary's scenery and it's definitely add-on mesh that is the culprit at Croydon. Default is fine, but add anything (I tried FS Global) and you get nice big holes just in front of the terminal.

However :wink:

If you add the following flatten switch to your scenery.cfg at the end of the entry for Croydon (I've included what mine looks like for reference, yours may differ) , the v.bulldozers move in and viola - no more holes (he says, crossing fingers)

[Area.064]
Title=Croydon
Active=TRUE
Layer=64
Local=Addon Scenery\Croydon
Flatten.0=261,N51 21.36,W0 7.95,N51 21.58,W0 6.79,N51 21.04,W0 6.66,N51 20.87,W0 7.78

Hope this helps,

Rgds,

Colin

For EFFOH:

Thanks for the modification to the terrain cfg, worked a treat!!

For DaveB;

Off to all nodes and I shall apply Effoh's flatten if necessary as I tooo run FSGlobal.

Back tomorrow.

Well done that man :wink:

You're not wrong about the nova textures either Colin. Unfortunately.. this load of flightsim is about 'As OLD as it get's' so I already have gazoolians of em already in my texture folder.

Strangely enough.. after I'd made the earlier post, I dragged JM's Croydon out of hiding, plonked trees0.bgl into my scenery/world/base folder.. found the v3 trees (again on my system) and all the darned things showed up :shock: Why the heck they've never done so before is beyond me. That said, Gerrish Grey says you put the trees0.bgl in one place and JM tell's you to put it in another. Sad fact is that authors put it wherever they fancy so a quick 'search' usually reveals about 4 different versions of the same file lurking in different folders :roll:

Anyway.. for folk out there who do not want to go down the 'fill your texture folder to the brim' route, the WWII era Croydon with Colin's fix does the job very nicely. Pity you can see a 2004 version Heathrow in the distance though :sad:

ATB and tks again Colin :wink:
