Classic British Flight Sim

Anyone used to watch Keeping up appearances? My PC is now doing the opposite of what Onslow's TV used to do... i.e. if I jolt it with my knee for example, it switches off. The most recent time it did it, it would switch on again. On no occasion have I touched the power button and today I removed the case sidepanel and checked all the connections and the cable and switch at the back on the PSU. Removed a bit of dust and screwed it back together and everything is tickety-boo, but I cant help but think I have must have a dodgy connection somewhere, anyone any ideas?

If it isn't a loose connection in your knee, then I don't know ;-)

A good advice would be: don't jolt it with your knee.....

On the serious part, you might want to go through all your connections and try to see if any of them are loosely fitted...especially of course the ones from your power unit....otherwise those kind of malfunctions can be a bit tricky to track down....good luck...

Thats just it, power switch seems ok, PSU cable to M/B seems ok, power cable into PSU ok, PSU switch on...

You might be bumping something out of its socket, pci card, graphics, ram ect causing the computer to reboot. I wouldnt recomend doing it :P

Belive me its not intentional It doesnt reboot, it just goes dead like someone switched it off at the mains

Are you sure the power cable is properly plugged in to the back of the box? these can be temperamental

I've seen it a lot with modern PC's; they are always on "standby" unless you switch them off at the wall in that they have a constant +5V going to the motherboard, and a fair few seem to be made with cheap switches that turn on/off and reset at the slightest nudge. If you can gain access to the switches built onto the bezel on the front of your PC it may be worth giving them a quick dust off with some compessed air.

If it is the power switch on the front of the cabinet, it can be disabled. Open the Control Panel, and then the "Power Options" dialog. Under the Advanced tab is a drop-down with options for what to do when the power switch is pressed. Select "Do nothing" and save the settings. You can still shut down the PC from the Start menu any time you like. I haven't touched the power button on my rig in months!

Will take a closer look at the switch. I will be surprised if its that but its not impossible!

I don't know if this will help but I'll give it a go. I've had this very thing happen to me and it turned out that the CPU fan was shutting off, due to a bad connection causing over heat. In this case, the box shut's off to save it's self.

Just a thought.
