Without sounding like a pompous twit - The damage to the nose and cockpit is as Sam says from low speed impact - the damage aft of the trailing edge is indicitive of a massive turbine failure which appears to have taken out the aft sub spar and the gear box for the wing - all of which would add up to FOD - I would think a large gull could do that sort of damage - looking at the pictures you can see the port engine and the fan seems fairly undamaged where as the Starboard fan is no where in sight

Just my opinion chaps

According to the Eastern Daily Press:

The pair, who has not been identified, was pulled from the water by rescuers using RAF Sea Kings.

???

Best wishes
