First Trislander and Skyvan flights

Hi there,
DaveB has been busy with his shakedown tests of the Trislander, operating three flights between Jersey, Dinard and Guernsey. I reckon Dave has picked the Trislander as it's got a spare engine stuck on the tail to help with the engine failures he keeps getting
Ben has blown the cobwebs off a Skyvan he found at Glasgow for a flight to Belfast and back. I think he was hoping to see if Shorts were still open.

Yes indeed, but alas, no flights to Sydenham, but at least she could see her birthplace on approach to Aldergrove. Some figures that others may find useful...
Cruise 170 Kts
Climb 120 - 130 kts
Not sure if the fuel flow gauges are to be believed, but the 95 mile trip averaged out about 200 Kgs each way, cruising at 6000Ft.
As Dan's sent the files to Rick, hopefully he will be able to work some magic so that repainting is easier.
All in all a nice and simple little aircraft... great fun.

Ben - your numbers are about spot on - we've been messing with it for
about three months - just waiting for the paints to get finished (for similar reasons - it really is a bugger to map) - hope you guys can find some
airfields to challenge you with it - the shortest we operate into at present is
a 1700 crushed coral runway (which it makes nicely even with the bloody great tree at the end of the runway) It even manages to make a tidy little some for short range hops

I think I must have a 'Friday afternoon' job as nowt makes sense with this little tinker.
I picked up BAIT from CDG last night and on the strength of 200kgh given above, I input the flight into FSN and it came out with an overall figure of 165kg for the flight to Manston. Less than half way there it was obvious that I was in deep do-do as fuel burned was over what I had left :roll:
8000ft seemed a reasonable enough height for this length of trip (148.4nm) so I set the climb to give me just about what Ben was doing and saw 320kgh +/- (which shouldn't have been a problem as I overestimated this figure for FSN). I can see no way you can fly at 2100-2700rpm as listed in the checklist as the N2 (I presume N2.. it could be N1) is calibrated in percentage and does not give tooltips. Therefore, my presumption was that the green section equated to 2100-2700rpm. Given that the lower edge of the 'green' equates to 80% power, this gave me 223kgh and 172mph/133kias.
The only saving grace in all this was that at least I had 8000ft underneath me as the second half of the flight was conducted at 112kts giving me an indicated 6nm extra
over the distance I had to fly. I eventually landed with 21kg onboard at the ding-dong!! :tuttut:
Serves me right for not doing a proper shakedown before I went live (flying once to check all the paints work isn't really to be recommended!) so a cursory note of warning to you all! :roll:
Fortunately, I had my usual collection of pax onboard and they were quite excited at the prospect of running out of fuel.. something they'd not endured before!
To conclude.. I can't for the life of me see how you can average 200kgh in the Transit without flying at tickover with one engine shut down

. Perhaps 8000ft is just too high though I find this unlikely

Just for clarification - I tend to set up in cruise and then tweak it
using the fuel flow until I get a solid cruise speed of 170 IAS
which has yielded about 200 kgph - and I dont think I have been
above 6000feet on most of the legs we fly as they are all less than
30 minutes - The only time Ive been higher than 6000' is going in
and out of PHBK (Bradshaw AAF on the big island which is at 6700
foot AMSL) the EGT never comes out of the green.

If you check my 2 flights, one was just over the 200 and the other just under, hence my "about 200"

Appreciate the pointers but again, I have to add I must have a rouge :roll:
Tweaking the fuel flow and seeing 170 of anything unless it's mph just doesn't happen for me. Setting the throttle to 80% (at the bottom of the green) and pulling the prop pitch down to as near as damn it 'feather' is giving me an IAS of 140kts (and that's not using the ASI either which reads close to 10kts fast at this speed!!). The fuel lever doesn't (of course) do anything other than turn the fuel on or off. No incremental change in FF.
The only thing I've not touched is the default load which may or may not have an influence on the proceedings but as all of our flights are generally considered
max pax, it hardly seemed worth it. Chances are, I'm running light if anything! :shock: Block fuel for my last flight (EGMH-EGBB) turned out at 222kg but at a cruise speed of 139/140kts, 6000ft and with all but the radio turned off
Whatever! It doesn't make bad money considering so that's a bonus in itself
