Blue Flashes in the Sky

I know this may be a stupid question but one that has always puzzled me.
Sometimes I have noticed in various locations in the UK at night, there have been blue flashes, at the times I have seen them there has been little or no wind, so power lines have not made contact with each other...... the sky has been clear, no storms.........and there has been no noise associated with it.....nor have I been anywhere near a bombing range!!!!
Has got me really perplexed over the years. Has anyone else noticed this or do I need to continue with my medication as still really worried about little green men and bigger ones..............in white coats!!!

Partial sky, full sky, duration (flash is kinda vague when we're talking astronomical and/or atmospheric events).
Sounds kinda like a mini-aurora or ionopheric discharge from your initial description, but again, will need more info to get closer.

The most common source of these is from electric trains. On the west coast main line, these can be seen for miles if there is not a lot of street lighting. In Lincolnshire this may not be a source. The other source, if they are flashes that travel across the sky, are meteorites, which are quite common - several per hour at these latitudes even when we are not passing through the regular clouds such as leonids, perseids, orionids, when one may see 100 or more per hour

You're not going mad, I've seen similar things when i've been out working at night.
Usually when i'm in a field in the middle of nowhere and there's no light polloution to block the sky out.
Little greeny/blue blankets of light floating quite fast in the sky, exactly like a mini aurora as Chris said.
I put it down to the moonlight reflecting between the clouds as they moved, not sure if thats right though.
All the trains round here are diesel powered too.

The problem is that if you did manage to make contact, they'll probably ask you to take them to your leader.
Won't be very impressed! :green:
When I close my eyes, I see blue flashing lights.
Did you see an ophthalmologist?
Nah, just flashing lights

Scarrier still, they might ask you to BE their leader!

Lol I sleep with my curtains open, and sometimes I swear there has been light on my face but when I open my eyes.... nothing.

Can't speculate on the flashes Nigel

on the mystery of crop circles
