Classic British Flight Sim

Gents,

I will shortly celebrate the 23rd anniversary of my 21st birthday

I'd like to include a book or video/DVD relating to Classic British aircraft on my 'wish list' - my favourites are the Viscount and the 1-11.

Anything that you would particularly recommend?

'BAC One-Eleven - The Whole Story' by Stephen Skinner - excellent

DO NOT buy 'BAC One-Eleven' by Malcolm Hill (Crowood Aviation series). is more about the history of British independant airlines than the One-Eleven

Another one in the Crowood series.. Vickers Viscount and Vanguard by Malcom L. Hill (ISBN 1 86126 669 3). I actually found this a bit of a disappointment as the subject I was most interested in (the Vanguard) seems terribly neglected by comparison to the Viscount but info on the Vanguard is scarce to beggars can't be choosers The Viscount is very well covered so you shouldn't be disappointed.

Another one you might like to consider is from the 'Legends of the Air' series by Stewart Wilson.. Viscount Comet & Concorde (ISBN 1 875671 21 . Not hardback like the one above but is A4/196 pages (many in colour) and for your GBP, you get fairly decent histories of all 3 aircraft

I have both the 1-11 pubs highlighted by Paul (VC10) and agree that the Crowood book is a bit naff though it too has plenty of colour pics. If you want to fill your head full of 1-11 data, one book that exceeds both by many times is the Air-Britain book The One-Eleven Story (ISBN 0 85130 221 1). I think I paid £20 for mine and you certainly get your monies worth. This and Stephen Skinners book compliment themselves very nicely

At last! Someone who has both of Malcolm Hill's efforts. I've been considering the Viscount/Vanguard book for some time, but his 1-11 effort has been holding me back until I'd seen a copy. How does it compare Dave? I'm looking for something more of the quality of the Crowood VC10 book

The bad news is I'm more interested in the Vanguard too.

I've not read it cover to cover yet as I dropped on another (but original) Air-Britain pub, also called Vickers Viscount and Vanguard (ISBN 0 05130 091 X(not sure about the X)). This one is very much like the Air Britain 1-11 book but in softback and I paid over the odd's for it :crying: I see that Air Britain are reprinting many of their older books in hardback.. but that's not what you're after

There is a reasonable amount of fact in the Crowood book.. told in Malcolm's usual story/timeline fashion but as the name would suggest, it tends to drift from one aircraft to the other causing me to fast-forward the pages to reach the next bit on the Vanguard :roll: I suppose it's natural that these two should find themselves between the covers so to speak as one came very much out of the development of the other and in that sense, it does follow a logical path. Unlike the Viscount which had many twists and turns, model numbers e t c, the Vanguards history has a lot less to talk about.. the 951 which neither main party really wanted, the 952 which TCA wanted and the 953 because BEA liked the 952 so adapted it to their needs.. oh, and the 953c

If you can get over the fact that two-thirds of the book is centred on the Viscount and with publications on the Vanguard being so rare, it has to be a 'must have' I suppose. A bit disappointing for Vanguard fans but you have to take what you can
