Saw on the news this morning that somebody, somewhere has raised enough money to restore one to flying condition...

Aparently, they've got just over £750,000 and will have it flying by April next year!

Shame I was half asleep when I saw the news clip. Otherwise I could tell you more!

Tom,

I wonder if this is 558?? She has recently been out for a dry run and my source confirms over £501k in pledges plus £114k in cash. I don't know of another that is 'near to' flying condition

Perhaps we shouldn't get too excited, money will still need to be found for the actual flying. But a great day in aviation, I'm sure you'll agree!

Great news to hear that the money has been pledged and that the funds are now available to restore the aircraft to flying condition, but never mind how much money has been raised or how much interested parties want to see the Vulcan in the sky again, do you think the Government will give permission for the aircraft to fly. ? Remember the grim hand of Health and Safety covers everything these days and it is an old aircraft. Even as we celebrate today some Official is drawing up a list of reasons why this aircraft should not be allowed into the air again. Remember that it's reason to exist was to deliver a nuclear weapon on our enemies who were doing the same thing to us. Some faceless official is considering who might be upset by the thought of a British Nuclear Bomber in the sky again, and they are forming their plans against us.

The was gone into at the beginning of the project. All the documentation is correct & in place. The ONLY stumbling block was the shortfall in cash. With that seemingly overcome (at the 59th minute of the 11th hour) it now looks like the aircraft will take part in the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Falklands conflict, due to take place next year - thats the 20th anniversay celebrations....not the Falklands conflict

Not the government, it's the CAA (indirectly the government!) who will give it permit to fly, before which the aircraft had to be assessed as to whether or not it is feasable to operate it on the civilian register. That is what this last stage is about - the requirement was for her to have a major service (basically a complete strip-down and rebuild) before the permit to fly being granted, hence all the cash being needed. When Vulcans were with the RAF, it was the taxpayer who footed the bill - now it's private money having to be raised - although I believe much of the expertise involved is 'ex-RAF' and they are following MOD procedures.

So, I don't think anyone will pitch up at this stage and say 'that's dangerous/too loud/offensive to Russians/not a nice colour - and you're not allowed to play with it'.

Unless, god forbid, it drops out of the sky. Then you'd be lucky to even be given permission to start a Tiger Moth up, never mind a Vulcan ...

A brilliant result all round. Most of the rebuilding was done by Marshalls who now have the license / permitt. There has been support from lots of organisation, including Rolls Royce etc.

Here she is in here hanger this evening (Camera 2) Live!!!
