its' other 'claim to fame' was doing a 'wheels up' touch and go
at Leuchars.
Crew forgot to put the gear down and it touched down on the 'Fletcher' tanks (the underwing tanks that Phantoms nearly always carried) at the same moment that the crew engaged the 'burners' for the go-around.
The left tank disintegrated completely, and the right one folded back over the wing leading edge. The crew completed their circuit and landed safely.
After this event it was flown to St.Athan for a 'penalty' overhaul to see if there was any more damage,( where I worked on it
) returning to 43 sqn at Leuchars on completion. ttfn
