HS 748 support

Very delighted with Rick Piper's HS 748 - it is superb. I do have a problem though: when I switch to Spot Plane view, after 10 - 20 seconds my computer starts to howl and then I get a blue screen with a warning that the program has been closed to protect my computer. The warning ends with'DATA DUMP BEGINNING'. There it sticks and I have then no alternative but to switch off at the mains supply. On very rare occasions I have had this happen with the Wings of Power Liberator in Spot View. Wonder if anyone has any ideas?

Hi Spacedout
Welcome to the crazy side of life
BTW there is an actual 748 support thread.
One thing I must ask, as the 748 is heavy on resources.......is the Liberator a complex model?
Do you run the Argosy (that's quite hungry) and does this happen with any others.
Just trying to see a link between the two you've mentioned.
What sound card do you use?

Hi Gary & Dave B
Smile Happy to hear from you.
I have got a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS card. Also the Wings of Power Liberator is complex but not as much as 748. I've also got PMDG 737 which is very complex but no problem. CPU= Athlon 64 3500 with 1GB PC3200 DDR RAM.
Missed the 748 support thread, but what would u expect of Spacedout when u are?

Hiya Spacedout..
I personally think that Creative should be shot but in the meantime, a temporary but often effective fix has been to open your sound quality and nudge it down from High (default) to Medium. To be honest, I can't tell the difference so that's where my setting is and I don't even HAVE an Audigy card
Try it and see how you get on

Yep almost certainlty the sound card.
It doesn't handle real quility sounds  and goes into a huff :huf:
There has been problems with these cards so if it persists a little search on Audigy problems should throw up the odd thread here and there.

Thanks both for your advice. I already run my sound at medium quality, so I tried LOW and what did I get? Total silence! Now, there's no rhyme or reason in this, but I switched to high quality sound and the HS 748 worked fine in Spot view. I even added complicated skyscape. But it was not to last: when I next tried it, it went into a huff(!). Being back to square ONE I tried the Audigy threads that I could find and those seemed to confirm your opinion of Audigy - a PCI Bus overload occuring. Now, a simpleton like me would never hace guessed that the problem was with the sound card. There does not seem to be any solution as it looks like a hardware problem.
Solution would appear to be to change the card but I found difficulty in identifying a card that you could be sure would perform, give 6.1 output with 3D. I guess you are not into recommending things but, without any liability on your part, which cards do you have? Are they any good and what would you like to have?
Anyway, enjoy your day. Regards, Pierre D (Spacedout)

Hi Pierre
One of the guys mentioned using a different driver (non Creative) on one of the sound threads and this (I think) sorted his problem. Alternatively, there
may be a different 748 soundset by Mark Cranston over on Classic British Files. I remember him talking about making some but honestly can't remember if they were ever released
I wish I could give you some advice on a replacement for your Audigy 2 but that's not my thing. Perhaps Charlie Bravo could point you in the right direction

It's odd that many of the sound probs reported for DM's soundsets (all of them in reality) have been Audigy card related and the strange thing is that these sounds were produced on an Audigy card!! The answer is out there but it may involve getting a new card I'm afraid
