Nortons has become a bit of a no no in the field of virus protection

But if anyone still uses it and feels it does it's job may want to read this.

Meh. Considering the number of holes Windows and Internet Explorer already have, what's another one? If you really want virus-free, switch to another OS. But then no FS.

I like that Garry... this stuff has a flaw but if you buy our software, you'll be safe!! It does state that the current suite antivirus/firewall doesn't appear to be at risk :roll:

Never really bothered with Norton as I have heard too many bad things & horror stories about it. I have always relied on AVG, which seems to be fine for me and has never let me down.

I know a couple of friends who use Norton and I will pass on the link Garry.

It is one of those risks with anything I suppose

The main reason for posting was of course this article but at the same time it will hopefully raise awareness that things may not always be as safe as one would like to believe.

The user needs to be vigilant and not trust anything as it may well be a "Safe" programme that gets worked around next.

I no nothing about these things at that level it's well beyond me but I know a computer can do all manner of things without the users knowledge.

Thanks Gary...Binned mine a year ago after I found that it slowed my computer down like treacle. :shock:

Problem is Nigel so many machines come with it fitted as standard

I asked the guy in the shop why they tell you Nortons is rubbish and yet supply new machines with it

Two reasons he said

It is well known, so people expect it to be there ( I suppose that's a name like Hoover meaning a vacuum cleaner and Sellotape meaning any clear adhesive), so ask if Nortons is dowloaded.

The other is a special deal done to suppliers.

It seems the industry is happy to sell a Nortons equipped machine as safe then when it gets hacked tell you you are a silly sod for only having Nortons and it's all your fault because you run Nortons and then sell you something else.

Naughty really

The message though is simple

Run what you feel is the best and then trust it not.

You never know

Garry, you might be interested to know that Computer Shopper ran a series of tests on a number of Anti-Virus software.

dare I put in the result of Nortons? What the heck!!!!

I think they were being kind with the rating.

Anyone who chooses to run Norton deserves what they've got coming.

Unfortunately Chris.. there are a lot of folk out there who don't know one end of a camel from the other and will have Norton pushed at them by sales folk in shops like PC World or have it bundled with their first pc. Were I not involved in this fine emporium of knowledge.. I may still be using it as I managed 4-years problem free use. The one major problem in all this time was on the odd couple of occassions I've picked up a bug.. Norton wasn't able to remove it. Ok.. it was isolated but I was never keen on it staying there!!

Anyway.. we all live and learn
