Airfield listings

Sorry to drag this one back up folks....
Peter, an ex girlfriend of mine lived in Stradishall for a while and I decided to have trek around the airfield if only to see what is left.
I got hold of this map:
A modern map:
and came up with this:
Off I went to discover what Stradishall had in store. What I presume to be the main apron area by the prison is still intact, as is most of the outer taxiway. The eastern part of the airfield is in a poor state though (taxiway broken up.)
The ends of the runways still exist as do some paint markings on the ground and even some taxiway edge lighting wiring.
The rest of the airfield is overgrown and is used as a Royal Anglian training ground.
My trek was 6-7 years ago and I haven't been back since.

Not a way in which an RAF airfield with so much history should be used. I would have rather seen it vanish completely than be turned into a prison!!
I was stationed there in 1969 - until it closed in 1970, there were rumours already floating about that it would be turned into a prison once we left. Had two flights in the Domini whilst there, one day and one night navigational flight up to Glasgow and back, was trying for a flight in the Varsity but never got up. :crying: It was a sad day when they finally flew out for their new home at Finningley, just left with the clearing up and packing.
CB, I think it was you (or my memory is getting bad) that wrote about Stradishall last year and I said that I may pay a visit, After seeing from a photograph of what Stradishall is like now I didn't bother to go as just the outlines of the runways could be seen imprinted into the grass....very sad.
