Tonight marks the 75th anniversary of the disastrous raid on Nuremberg, during which 95 Bomber Command aircraft were shot down, and a further 10 written off afterwards. In this one night, the RAF lost 545 aircrew; more than in the entire Battle of Britain. Among them was Halifax flight engineer Christopher Panton, to whose memory the museum at East Kirkby and their Lancaster 'Just Jane' is dedicated.

Before you go to bed tonight, nip outside, look up into that dark sky and whisper a thank you.

I consider myself lucky to have safely lived between the ebb and flow of wars. I really don't know whether I could have done what they did.

A terrible tragedy and for those who survived had to once again brave the flack and night fighters until either they were killed, shot down or completed their number of missions.
