"Depressed and self-medicating" is certainly no excuse.

I know I might be in a minority here, but I can't help feeling a little sorry for him. One act of stupidity and his career and self-respect are both destroyed. Yes, it was right to catch him, and I wouldn't have wanted to have been one of his passengers - but I still feel some sympathy.

It seems JAL has a problem with drunk pilots having had 19 cases reported in just over a year. They are not the only airline with this issue either. 8)

I agree with you to a point Paul. He was obviously aware when he was drinking that he would be unfit to fly and he must have known he was putting his life and career in jeopardy, and yet he still went ahead and drank anyway. To me this implies he must have been in a desperate place in his mind that his need for alcohol overrode his sense of self-preservation. I know this is no excuse and of course he must face the consequences, but I too feel a sense of pity for him.
