Back in late 1980's early 1990's, I actually owned The Bush Inn at Canon Pyon, Herefordshire. According to The Guinness Book of names, it is the earliest known pub name. Back in the day, beer and cider were not always available, but when a new brew was ready, the landlord hung a bush on a pole outside to let people know.
