Classic British Flight Sim

Would really like to be able to put a GPS where the moving map display is on the Trident but have no idea on how to do it.

There are a few GPS that are already installed in payware aircraft that I have but think that I would not be allowed to use them (licence agreement)?

FSX has one and wonder if that could be used and if so could any-one tell me how to do it as I have not got a clue!!

Also would like to know where the FSX map display is stored in FSX Folder and how to access it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's normally a matter of just replacing the relevant gauge in the panel.cfg with the GPS. I does depend somewhat on how the original moving map was implemented though.
I'm not at the PC at the moment, but I can have a look later this evening and see if it's possible.
re. other GPS's from payware, if it's for your own use then that's probably OK but I doubt they would work as the knobs & switches will probably be modeled into the VC.

I'm sure I've seen re-hashed versions of the default GPS lurking around the web. I'll have a quick search

Looks a bit pants as the aspect ratio of the GPS is different to the moving map. The GPS could be stretched, but that looks odd as well.

To add the GPS as I've done above, open the panel.cfg found in "YourFSXFolder/Airplanes\DMFS Shared Files\HS121 Trident Panel VC FSDS3" and add:

gauge40=fs9gps!gps_500, 263,153,337,349

after the last gauge entry in the [Vcockpit02] section. You can play around with the position by altering the 263,153 numbers, and size by altering the 337,349.

Dave G , nice one that ; If only it had been that good . Blinking Doppler kept wandering off all over the place ; and the pointer thing replaced to where you really were. Worse over calm seas . Thus half way between Dover and Kristiansand , out of range of either VOR ; and yes a calm North Sea ... Good for situational awareness 'tho ; 'specially if one had been head down for a bit , was P3 on the panel , or had gone out for a leak .
Just don't use it for an approach , or if an accurately flown dep. route was needed .

Tried your suggestion first and as you wrote appears a bit pants! which sadly it does however, I managed to install the Carenado GPS but don't think that there is much improvement either.



Tried the Twin Otter but that is being slightly elusive at the moment as it does not appear to have a gauge folder but will keep trying.

Ideally what it requires is just the frame without all the knobs and switches with the frame being slightly thinner than the one present but have no idea how the GPS frame is built in (probably coded)

I think any addon like this is going to look pants in the Trident mate.. simply because it doesn't belong. It's like putting a Vulcan Phalanx on the stern of HMS Belfast.. W R O N G!

However.. if you're still intent on buggering the Trident up, there's another gauge at Allnodes (the one I couldn't find yesterday) called gps.zip. The control buttons for it are less obtrusive than the options you've tried but I can't vouch for it's functionality.

Dave B , I agree it looks wrong . Nigel well done in fitting it . ..........
However ... as a '' wot if '' . Trident was killed off in the UK in December 1985 , by noise regulations ; if nothing else . 757s already had INS/FMC powered maps by then , so a retrofit could have produced as your photos . Indeed the 747-100/200 fleet added a TV type map and a standalone FMC. Not where 75s, 76s , 733/4/5s had them .. underneath the A/H,[ Attitude Indicator ]and as part of the DI, DG ,HSI .
But a wider type screen fitted in front of the throttle quadrant . The certification costs of fitting a complete or even partial glass cockpit would have been horrendous . Adding a glass 'map' was easy and cheap , and improved hughly the crews situation awareness and navigation capability . .
But if we'd have really been given that option , I bet most crews would have bitten your hand off .

Which Twin Otter do you have - Aerosoft Extended? If so, I'll have a root around in mine and see what I can find.

Hi Collin, I have the Twin Otter Extended but first you may wish to view the following screen shots I have done before Dave has a fit!!

After Dave G kindly advised as to how to put in the GPS into the Trident and having some spare time at home I got back to work on it.

I first installed the FS9 GPS making alterations so that it would fit into the moving map frame and then installed the Carenado GPS. Just don't think that it looks good in the Trident if however, I could just make a frame out of the GPS without the buttons and place it into the Trident then that may look much better as all I wanted to do was in some way replicate the moving map.

This is the FS9GPS, had to resize this one as it was different to the Carenado but still fits in nicely

Add into Panel Folder [Vcockpit02] after 39 add following gauge40=fs9gps!gps_500, 282,173,300,293 These were the settings for the fs9 GPS only.

However, just out of arguments sake, if a Trident was ever restored to flying condition (which it won't) would not the CAA as part of the certification of the Trident ask for a GPS or similar to be installed? If so then I have installed the GPS into another location. Now unfortunately this is going to send Dave into orbit and by this time tomorrow I may be BANNED from the Forum but who cares, I just found that I can place something into an aircraft without making a c*ckup!
