Stornoway 36 for Aharon

Aharon , Liked your Saab trip . It prompted a few thoughts ....
Today we were visited by an ex Compton Abbas instructor .1st seen as a teenage microlight instructor now a Loganair Senior First Officer about to get his command on the Saab 340s . Today his passed his test to be a PPL examiner .

Rarely snowy in Stornoway due proximity of the Gulf Stream . Now someone mentioned wind .......prompted a 1st time photo scan ..

SYY , Rwy 36 , 15th April 1992 , about 40+kts from the East .....

Image

G-BTPJ , or Papa Jugular . If zoomed in , flare just started as elevators just beginning to move up . Drift still applied but kicking off beginning as rudder V slightly to the left , and ailerons moving to put right wheels down 1st [ into wind wheels ] . Full flap to get a short stop and avoid a long taxi in .
Bottom centre , even the birds are walking [ or maybe holding on the post ] . Looks like an Oyster catcher , or Sandpiper , but he's parked into wind with ground locks engaged !
Wind is everyday bread and butter in The Western or Northern Isles to those who ply their trade there . 60 kts across is not unknown in Benbecula , operations normal ;
100 kts overnight experienced in Shetland . Luckily we were in hotel bar , but felt like a sledge hammer hitting the hotel .

The Minch more difficult if you are afloat ... once passed 3 submarines in 30 minutes , and flew a lowish pass by one of Dave B's frigates , [ thought it might appear unfriendly if we went straight over his stern , and we did not know where his Lynx was ] and being the senior , silent , service they did not answer our courtesy calls on 'Guard' frequency .

Aharon thanks again for your pictorial trips .

Would that have been 121.5 or 243.0 Dave? :cpu: To the best of my knowledge (or memory.. what's left of it) we never 'routinely' monitored 121.5 but 243.0 was always 'on speaker' ;)

Lovely shot by the way and thanks for taking the time to scan and post it :thumbsup:

Crosswinds had a 340 off runway 18 in January and the report has just been published on the AAIB website. I take my hat off to the aircrew who fly into the island airports in this neck of the woods. They regularly fly in and out in the most appalling weather conditions - not much fun if you're a passenger though :-O

Dave : it would have been 121.5 - I never saw a civil aircraft which carried the "double" military frequencies of UHF

Incidentally, 55-60 kts was regular at IOM in winter in my day but with 2 runways the crosswind component could usually be reduced, but it was very turbulent if the wind was in the southwesterly /northwesterly quadrant

Dave B , yes as CS suggests most civil a/c only have VHF ... but somewhere in the mist of time something about the UHF guard could receive VHF distress calls 'cos of ''harmonics'' or wiggly amp thing and 243 is double 121.5.
Aharon , you are welcome and please keep your travelogues coming .

Yeah.. you're right Dave. I guess it depends on what the RN ship was doing and if the ops room was manned. You may have been heard but baffled the erk on the other end :lol: We would not.. as a rule.. transmit on Guard unless absolutely necessary :)
