This sends a shiver through me and no mistake:

I can't watch without imagining getting caught and sucked down by it.

That's pretty wild. Here's a pic of mine showing where the water will be exiting from the vortex. This is the dam on the Red River situated between Texas and the state of Oklahoma. The water from Lake Texoma feeds into the Red River. The lady in the pic is Mrs. FlyTexas...not to be confused with "the stuff of nightmares".

I'm supposing that this only happened during the actual draining of the excess, like you get round your domestic plug hole.
Have to agree, it's scary.
Hello Mrs Fly Texas

Yep, the vortex is manmade. Beneath the vortex is a large drain designed to drain off excess water from the lake. The vortex is like the vortex you see in your bathtub when the water gets down to a certain level while emptying. I hope the fish stayed away from the vortex.

Ah, thanks for that Brian. I'm getting a bit slow these days. In fact, I've only just realized the significance of the lake's name.
Texas...Oklah
oma = Lake Texoma. I get there in the end.
