Hotmail/Windows Live

Hi Chaps
You know when you make a Hotmail (or these days, a Windows Live) email account.. it asks for an alternative email address which can be used for any number of reasons.. not least of all to recover your Hotmail account should something go wrong. Now.. when I opened my Hotmail account years ago.. my alternate email address was at btinternet.com. That was fine until I got rid of BT! If I want to make security changes to my Hotmail account now.. it wants to send a code to the BT address to verify I'm the bonafide user. I've looked at Hotmail until I'm blue in the face and I can't find a way around Hotmail/Windows Live wanting to use the old BT address.. a Catch 22. Also.. I can't find any way to change the alternate address.
Do any of you clever chaps know a workaround?
