The title pretty well says it all. ATC's initial response pretty well matches up with my first thought.

Yes.. the disbelief in the controllers voice summed up what any other controller would have thought! :-O Still.. the 172 pilot was completely unphased and seemed more than capable :) A little 'different' perhaps but capable nontheless

Interesting isn't it. In the 1970s LHR still accepted light traffic , and we went in there a number of times to ferry people to connecting flights even in singles on occasion . Similarly, Schiphol and Frankfurt Main took VFR traffic as a matter of course , as did Manchester , and I went to Berlin down the corridor more than once ( but you were bloody careful about the navigation ! ) . Whether the situation at e.g. Schiphol is still the same I don't know

My father recounted the story of taking his Proctor into Heathrow back in the late 50's, maybe early 60's when he was working there ( Fields possibly?) as he wanted to do its C of A there. He had of course made prior arrangement but was in a pattern and was asked to speed up because there was a 707 behind him - he replied 'Cant go any faster I'm flat out as it is!' They were then further perturbed when he asked to touchdown on block (number don't remember) which was the last one of the runway in use! He thought that they had misread the registration for a Viscount -AHNA for -ANHA!
Those were the days....

Aren't there fees for landing at such a place? I wonder how much they are.
Ach! I land at YVR all the time in a 152 never had the virtual ATC baulk at me once.

Hi Alex,

Not sure if it's current but 34.00 clams is the asking price for small types which will be waved for a fuel purchase of 7 gals or more. (of course more)
Plus look at the amenities mate .. free big screen tv (that's right they give you a big screen TV!).. a wheeled chair,
ANd •Signature's standard popcorn, Starbucks Coffee, and Otis Spunkmeyer cookies
Plus more!
Found it on Air Nav ;)

He followed a 747 in, so does anyone have any idea what the safe minimum spacing would be ? Would it be more than normal, given the small size of the 172 and the large wake turbulence from a 747 ?
