A new use for old Beetles?

I stumbled across this on YouTube, as you do. This chap built a seven cylinder radial engine using some bits from VW Beetle engines. I was amazed both by the workmanship, and how well it runs. I'd heard before of using Beetle engines in kit planes, but I rather doubt this was what anyone had in mind.

Good stumble ;)
As to why, I felt a bit the same; with engineering skills like that, why not make your own cylinders too?
My father designed and built an in-line 6, petrol powered, about 18cm long. Now in the hands of my older brother in the UK.
He had a lot of trouble with piston rings breaking.
