Wing-tip pod - Anyone seen anything similar ?

Post by basys »

Hi Folks

Just seen something unusual flying over.

What appeared to be -
a single-engined high-winged prop a/c
with a massive wing-tip pod, (3 or 4 x chord).

The weird bit - pod appeared to be port side only.

Anyone seen anything similar ?

Hi Ben

Approx 20:00 UTC over Barrow in Furness,
heading north, but possibly starting to circle eastwards.

Will take a peek.

Cheers

Possibly a weather radar, a lot of PC-21s have one like that near, from memory, the right wingtip.

All of the Pilatus singles have their weather radar in the same general location as do all of the TBM, Malibu/Mirage, 206/207/208, and probably a couple other light singles I'm forgetting.

Hi Folks

Ben -
Cheers, unfortunately flightradar showed nothing relevant.

Everyone -
A/C was definitely high-winged,
though undiscernable from paint-scheme & angle of view,
it might possibly have been twin-engined.

Googled lots of survey & geophys aircraft,

The as-seen pod was definitely massive in comparison
versus all piccies I'd found of those types you'd variously cited.

However,
there was one similar pod-sized possible match -
Sander Geophysics Limited of Canada
have a TwOtter with equivalent massive wing-tip pods, (C-GSGF).
Paint-scheme, angle of view, and low sun, may have obscured view of stbd pod.

Coincidentally she's been flying in Eire last week.

What about the Citywing (formerly Manx2) Let 410's operating from the IOM??? At least one of them has tip tanks.

Hi Folks

Cheers Nigel.
Yep she's a possibility,

though tank looked longer, less fat, or short.
