Announced on Mutley's Hangar forum: considerable reductions on many well-known brand names, including 50% off Rex ( maybe time to get Rex 4 ! )

So- I have AS2012.
I upgraded to ASN, but, bizarrely this doesn't have it's own textures so the drill is:
1. Start AS2012, wait for it to download all the weather. Load the flight plan so it knows which weather I'm after.
2. Load weather-influenced textures. (This takes a while)
3. Go have a drink somewhere.
4. Read War and Peace, sometimes you have time to do this twice.
5. Close AS2012.
6. Open ASN.
7. Load weather, read briefings- Fly.
So, I know a lot here have REX of some kind.
Is REX easier to use with ASN?
At £10 for REX4 texture Direct, it seems worth a look.
I have (he say's) all the aircraft I want now. A good selection to keep my happy and with AS I have a good looking environment too, it's just a bit scrappy!

Not quite sure where you are here Paul. ASN is a weather engine.. a clever one but a weather engine nonetheless. Can't see why you have to load up AS2012 first

Does AS2012 have it's own cloud textures?? I went from ASA to ASN (missing AS2012 out) and can't remember what textures ASA used
Whatever.. I have REX Essentials +Overdrive which also has its own weather engine but I don't like it much.. hence the move to ASN. I set whatever textures I like from REX (to know the workings of REX inside and out is probably like learning to fly Concorde so you should be ok

) then forget about REX altogether. I've not opened it in weeks. Been tempted by REX4 but as I don't really use REX anymore.. it seemed pointless. I'm not sure if REX4 has it's own weather engine.. I'd presumed it was just textures and from what other users have said.. they're much like REX E+OD.
I'm sure that ASN uses the default weather textures (or whatever textures you have loaded) and interprets them in its own way so if you buy nothing at all, you should get much better weather depiction and the whole kit and caboodle will look better

REX often comes up cheap so if you don't get it this time, don't lose heart.. it'll be along again in the not too distant

Hmmm, that's strange - I remember asking about REX and AS (I think it was at Mutley's Hangar a few years ago) and was recommended to use both.
AS to generate the weather and REX to provide the great textures.
Maybe things have changed since.

REX 4 TD is just textures... Bloody good ones, but no weather engine. You can use whichever weather engine you like, ASN or the old REX plus essentials weather engine or any other one.

That's about right...
AS2012 has it's own texture set, very much like REX I assume. ASN doesn't have textures so I use AS2012 to load weather influenced textures to get the "look" right.
I then close AS12 down and use those textures but use ASN as the weather depiction and wx radar etc.
As AS2012 is designed to do weather and a load if other stuff and this takes ages to load up and load textures and is a bit dated now, my question is am I worthwhile getting this REX and coupling that with ASN? Are Rex textures better than AS, is the interface better etc?

Hi Paul
Well.. REX is a texture set with a built-in weather engine rather than AS2012 which is a weather engine with it's own textures. REX covers almost every aspect of the FS environment (if not EVERY aspect) and REX4 is, as far as I can see, more of the same but with slightly different textures and better compatibility with P3D. I didn't think it came with its own weather engine but reading the blurb.. I see mention of REX4 Direct Weather
So.. in a very small nutshell.. REX E +O/D is a massive texture set that will change your water, clouds, lights, airport markings, sun e t c plus it has a weather engine which you don't have to use. REX4 is, I think, more of the same (hence a discount for users of REX E +O/D to get em to buy it!).. an updated version of REX if you will. I'm still not sure about the weather engine (if it has one or not) but given that you already have ASN.. I think you'd be as well buying REX4 and picking the bones out of that for your textures rather than going down the REX E+O/D path. Hopefully, someone who has both will jump in

I know of a few users who use REX4 plus ASN btw

REX 4 TD is the current product and doesn't have a weather engine.
