Such brave men bless'em.You can't help but be full of admiration for what they achieved.
I went on one those battlefield tours to Normandy about 10 years ago.We had an excellent guide who was so knowledgeable and to be shown the exact locations of many of the actions really brought it home.
The father of the friend that I went with was one of those men tasked to remain as long as possible in order to hold back the Germans while the evacuation took place at Dunkirk in 1940.He survived and was eventually evacuated and then 70 years ago today he landed with the Canadians on the beaches.
He died about 8 years ago but like so many brave men he never spoke much about it.EricT

My late father took part in the D-Day landings and I always think of him and his comrades at this time.

He was a Royal Marine Commando and on D-Day itself he manned an anti-aircraft gun on board a Royal Navy destroyer standing off Sword beach. On DD+1 he was part of the demolition crews that blew the bottoms out of the concrete block ships used to form the temporary harbours. On DD+2 he landed on the beach and then fought his way across Europe until he was finally de-mobbed in Berlin in 1946.

His unit was also one of those who were supposed to be at the infamous 'Bridge Too Far' during 'Operation Market Garden' but they didn't get there in time as they were stuck in the massive traffic jam trying to get up the Arnhem Corridor.

My old man was a gunner in the RN but as both my parents are dead I can't ask what he was doing at the time.Perhaps it's just as well though because I was born on 10th March 1945 so it's probably best that I don't know!! :agree: EricT

Very appropriate pictures, Roger, I watched the coverage on BBC World News and I have to admit, I got a bit teary eyed. Such brave, couragous chaps and so modest about what they accomplished.
