Mobile phones and 250mb data

Hi Chaps
A question for you mobile phone interneters.

If a mobile comes with 250mb of internet use per month, what does that equate to in real terms. What I mean is, what will 250mb actually get you? I shouldn't imagine it's a lot

I've no interest in downloading stuff or spending copious amounts of time ont' web with a mobile.. that's what my pc is for but I can get a tariff that offers x amount of minutes plus more texts than I've ever sent in my life plus 250mb of internet for a tenner pm. I currently pay a tenner a month to Vodafone which includes free Vodafone to Vodafone calls, a billion texts and that's it. Just wondering if it's worth swapping. I'd have to get a new phone of course.. my Sony Ericsson C510 isn't up to browsing. I tried once and ended up sending my daughter a text with instructions for her to find what I was looking for (my BB was down and I didn't have the number for the ISP.. most frustrating)
Anyhoo.. that's it. If 250mb will last 3mins browsing CBFS, I won't bother. If it'll get me rather more mileage, I might consider it
Thanks in anticipation

Hi mate,
the Mrs and i are on Vodafone too. £36 for both numbers on sim only as getting a phone through a contract is the most expensive way to do it. I get 1GB of data on my sim and Mrs gets 250mb. The thing is, because you connect the phone to WiFi most of the time, you hardly use the data allowance. For example, so far this month I've used 180mb. That's with 5 email accounts that are set to update immediately a mail comes through, browsing here and the bbc website mostly, some flight radar, the Nokia drive + sat nav (uses data for real time traffic, but the maps are offline.), the nokias have datasense that shows exactly how much data you're using and which apps or services are using it. It gives you this breakdown for WiFi and mobile. What's more, if you tell it what your allowance is, you can set it to disable data when you get near you limit. Mrs W uses hers for facebollocks, ebay, mumsnet and crap like that, as well as email and hast gone over her limit yet.

Hello Mate
I think I understand that

As far as using wifi is concerned.. that wouldn't apply if I were 'out and about' would it (I'm thinking home wifi here)?
Both my phone and SWMBO's are contract, sim only with vodaphone. I never really used my phone until my folks were ill and we found using PAYG too darned expensive. Helen was up for a new phone (contract with vodafone) so we sent her to the local shop to sweet talk the bloke behind the counter. She came away with a new Blackberry (she's on iphone5 now) and 2 x £10 monthly contracts for me and the guv
The provider I'm thinking about using is Sainsbag's (oddly enough

) and as these use the vodafone network.. my coverage will remain unchanged. I can't find anything to say I'd get free calls to either Sainsbury's connected numbers or vodafone for that matter but I doubt I come vaguely close to my monthly allowance on my current tariff so it wouldn't be a problem. If Mrs W manages a whole month on 250mb doing what she does (which would be more than me but with more wifi too).. it may be worth the push. I already have a sim
Cheers mate.. food for thought

FWIW, I bought an iPad (mini) with 3G last year, and by way of experiment bought a PAYG I month data package for it in October. The iPad has taken over a great deal of my internet browsing through my home WiFi since then, but, at the time, I used it for between an hour and two hours a day on o2 3G. That only cost about 800Mb out of the 1Gb allowance that came with the SIM, bearing in mind that even an iPad can't (generally) download files from the net ... at times, I began to wonder how on earth I was going to use anywhere near the 1Gb allowance, so you could consider that 800Mb an over estimate for a general month's browsing.

Thanks for that Ro
I can't see me ever using a mobile for 1-2hrs browsing per day. I'm either at home or I'm at work and my work involves driving so not much opportunity to browse for that length of time. On occasion, and today was one such occasion as it happens, I have periods of waiting between delivery slots and this varies greatly. Generally.. I have a 20min break depending on the length of the shift and I almost always use only 10mins then I get cracking again. I use the phone to let SWMBO what's happening and again when I finish work so she can get the kettle on
What got me wondering if 250mb was worth anything at all was that I check my BB usage every now and again and for what appears to be little or no time online, my use for that day seems disproportionate if that makes sense. Overall.. I doubt very much whether I'd use it to go online close to an hour and that certainly wouldn't be every day. When I'm not at work (non work days e t c).. my phone is 'on' as work use that number sometimes but the phone doesn't really get used. SWMBO calls me on it when she's on nights (that is, she calls my mobile from hers). I can't see the point in using it to browse at home, even using wifi. An ipad.. yes but not a mobile.
I think I'll try it (PAYG) and see how it works out. Thanks again for your input

One thing of note, watching videos hammers the battery and the data, whether that be youtube, iplayer or even just bits on the news. PAYG is a good idea to get a feel for how much your using and before going for a contract.

I was going to mention vids (Youtube) above but back-spaced it out. Watch a 5 or 6min vid then check your usage a couple of hours later and OMG!

Hiya mate
Only recently dropped down to sim only on O2 for I think £11 a month it gives me 600 mins and 250mb last bill was 35 mins and 105 mb used
I've set up apps so they only download data when WiFi available Don't need to pick up email on the go, so not got that set up on the phone With all the rubbish I'm sent every day if it came via 3g it would soon reach my cap

Is it a WP8 OS or Android.. or Apple for that matter? I'm leaning towards WP8 at the mo. Not only are these less susceptible to hackers, they're apparently better at preserving battery life. The phone I'm looking at (2 phones I'm looking at) don't have such massive batteries so having an OS that won't eat them is important
I had a look at Vodafones latest tariffs today and for 300min, 500txts (I think it's 500) and 250mb.. it's a quid cheaper than I'm currently paying without internet. Not sure if they'll let me change tariffs mind you as I'd be paying less

Can't imagine there'd be a problem though as I've been on this one for 3yrs now

Hi mate
Been with android for a bit now since getting the Samsung on contract over 2 years ago The Samsung took an eco wash for an hour so bought a nexus to replace it. Well pleased with it as its identical to the tablet. Apps pictures music whatever bought or uploaded to one, appear as if by magic on the other device.

When the contract ran out a few months ago downgraded to sim only. Did consider w8 phone at the time but too many pros and cons The nexus had glowing reviews and was best value for money
