Pop goes the weasel PSU

My (as in too old for anyone else in the family to be seen dead at) FS9 sim PC just went dead with a balloon popping noise and a wee puff of festive smoke out the back.

Would it be a fair bet to assume the PSU is well and truly blown - given that it is a 6ish yr old Tagan TG380?

I'm guessing the only sensible solution would be a PSU like the Corsair 430 for a PC with an athlon XP and a GTX560 video card. The really sensible suggestion would be a new PC but Santa is booked up for this year!

I think your assumption would be correct Allan. Sometimes they go in spectacular fashion as you've witnessed and others, they're fine one day and the next.. nada.. complete silencia

Given you're thinking (contemplating anyway) doing an upgrade.. perhaps buying a beefier PSU would be a good buy as you'd be able to use it in future builds. I dunno though.. it depends on just how far off you are from making this move. Overkill on a PSU is no problem as long as you make sure it's suitable for your current rig AND any perceived upgrade :) A Corsair 430 should be cheap as chips (EVEN a Corsair 430). I think I ran similar on my Athlon XP rig ;)

Thanks Dave, when the upgrade happens it will probably be taken over by the family and then I will inherit the five year old Dell for simming.

Well I only pay for the kit after all. The 7" tablet that Santa is bringing probably has more processing power than the Athlon machine! 8)
