ORBX release Compton Abbas

EGHA released this morning. This is the first UK airport that has really appealed to me and because of it's beautiful setting in the hills on the edge of Cranborne Chase, I'm very tempted to buy England just to be able to fly here. And also annoy Dave Farrow, who can only fly in and out of the real thing. Poor sap

Bad news for ORBX fans with slow or no broadband connections. They are no longer able to offer boxed DVD versions of new products. It's because their supplier has gone out of business and the sale of DVDs has reduced to unviable numbers.

Ian :)

Well annoyed today ... low cloud , mizzle , 'n an out of limit lumpy Southerly wind . I'll get a coffee and fire up Fs9 ! Mind you Terrain and uk 2000 is still pretty good . And with photo scenery can navigate slowly from pub 2 pub for a virtual pint !
Enjoy CA and hope to see you there sometime .

Oh B*ll*cks!! :( Oh well, have to make other arrangements as and when able but thanks for letting us know Ian.
BTW. Downloaded scenery such as Wales are you required to activate it or will it install and run without activation?

Nigel

You can still get Wales on DVD, Nigel. Anything released after Southern Alaska won't be available. And obviously when they run out of stock there won't be any more.

With the downloaded file you need to be connected to the internet to install it. Part of the installation process is to enter the order number and serial number and have it checked before the installer will run. I'm not sure how you'd get round that. Maybe there's a pay-as-you-go broadband USB dongle that will allow you to connect to the internet and pay for just the one minute or so that it takes to register?

Hummm!! *-) *-) *-) *-) *-) *-) *-) *-) *-)

Ping!!!!! might be a way through that B-) ....the owner of the computer shop I use when needing any upgrades or repairs might just allow me to bring down my computer and install from his site for a small fee.

What really annoys me is that due to software piracy and developers trying to protect their products by demanding that installation has to be done over the internet there is no thought for those who are not connected and therefore unable in many cases to use certain software products which they would otherwise buy. :(( I know the argument will arise on developers wanting to protect their interests and revenue (and who can blame them) but just wish they would or could look at other ways (like Capt Sim for instance) for potential buyers to be able to register a product by sending a code and receiving a key in return to enable an install.

Rant over, but this certainly puts me off wanting to buy any further FSX products and feel like just making do with what I have and leaving it at that!!

Nigel.

Nigel - why don't you ask them on the support forum if there's an alternative way of validating the installer? They're the only people who will know, otherwise we'll just be guessing.

Good point Ian though unfortunately unable to get to the Forum as site is blocked by IT and it will be some time before I am able to get to the library.

I've been doing some research, Nigel, and all is well :)

The FlightSim Store download wrapper contains an option for manual validation on a PC not connected to the internet in a similar manner to the way you did with Captain Sim.

The full instructions are here, but you may need to be at the library to see them. They're also saying in the forum that you can opt for an additional physical copy of the download file on disk when you purchase the download. Although it's just a disk and not a boxed presentation and would need to be validated - unlike the boxed DVD.

Ian you are a star!! really appreciated, many thanks. Just one more question, when the file is downloaded surely that could be saved to DVD and then re-installed if ever the need arises or again is that not possible hence the option of the DVD?

Ians' thoughts......Question, questions and more bl**dy questions :wall:

Nigel.

Yes. As far as I understand, the DVD copy of the download file would be an exact replica of a file you downloaded yourself and then saved to your own DVD. The only reason I can imagine that someone would want that option (and pay the extra fee) is if they have no way at all of downloading the file. Billy No-Mates!

Again - reading between the lines - it seems that the file on the DVD in the boxed set has the addition of an autorun file and no requirement for online activation. Otherwise the same.

It's taken quite a bit of debate on the forum for people to realise that all options are still available and nobody is being denied access to ORBX products. The only ones that are miffed are the collectors who have shelves of DVD boxes to show off to their ... cats? They're now pleading for DVD and box labels to be available for download so that they can keep their collections intact. But they are in the minority - or at least the ones who admit to it are in the minority
