The Fast Diet

Did any of you catch the Horizon programme from last year when Dr Michael Mosley researched the scientific evidence for improving health quite dramatically by fasting? He came up with a 5:2 diet plan (eating what you want 5 days a week and restricting calories to 600 on each of two other days) which showed amazing health and weight benefits for him over quite a short period.
He's now published a book 'The Fast Diet' which is topping the best sellers and most people on it claim similar surprising success. I just thought I'd say that it works for me as well. I've been on it since the beginning of the year and have lost over 8 pounds with no hardship at all. Anything I want five days a week and very little on Mondays and Thursdays. That's all there is to remember. I'm now down from the slightly overweight category into normal for the first time in about 5 years!

I just thought I'd mention it in case anybody was looking for an easy way to improve their health. This is well worth considering.

Likewise. I'm 6'1" and have just crept the wrong side of 14 stone.

I'm piling on weight even though I can't eat much

I remember a 'Round the Horne' gag about a lady who tried one of those slimming machines (the latest fad, at the time) and lost 2 stone in 30 seconds...
The machine tore her leg off

I liked his other Horizon on exercise. 12 minutes of crazed exercise on the cycling machine a month split into 3 hell for leather 20 second segments every other day. I tried it, certainly burned up some of the fat. But like all these things, you have to be really committed.

Hi Alex. Yes, I saw that one. It sounds easy on the face of it but it's really for only for fit athletes anyway, isn't it? It only works with very very extreme effort over that short period so in practice would have to be incorporated into regular gym sessions. Like you say - you have to be really committed.
The difference with the Fast Diet is that the commitment basically involves skipping lunch on two days a week which is
my sort of commitment!
OK - it's a little bit harder as breakfast and dinner aren't very big but you start feeling the benefits quite quickly which helps keep you focussed. Even after a week my brain felt sharper, my clothes felt looser and I had more energy and now after a month I've dug out my old T-shirts to show off my flattening tummy. The hard bit is the first couple of fasting days because you don't know what to expect - hunger-wise. I did have an apple and a pack of crackers in my bag in case of an emergency

But now I know that hunger doesn't grow more extreme during the day until you can't think of anything else. It comes in waves and you have a drink of water or a black tea or coffee and it goes away again for a couple of hours. It doesn't wake you up in the middle of the night and the next morning you don't wake up ravenous and you don't have a huge appetite. So having found that hunger (at this level!) is nothing to worry about, I no longer carry an emergency snack. Just a bottle of water and some redbush tea.

Through U3A, Mrs Airspeed and I attend a Herb education group.
We've been told that eating a raw carrot does wonders for filling you up and putting off hunger.
Might try the fast thing though I'm already in the OK weight range. The idea of a sharper brain appeals to me!

Just ordered the book. A stone off for me and I'll be happy. I'm on the awkward border between M and L in shirts; I either look like I've shrunk my shirt in the wash and not noticed or have it billowing around me like a sail!
