Where might this be?

Post by DaveB »

Hi chaps :hello:

Been toying with the idea of dragging the Aerosoft Cat off my old install into the new one and in a moment of boredom this evening, I did just that. I've been making my way up the UK again (as one does when one is unemployed and has nowt better to do!) so started the Cat up at my last stopping place.. Prestwick. North Connel.. I seem to remember that looks nice.. I'll pop in on my way to Barra :)

Image

Had I time-warped into ORBX Scotland?? :-O :-O

No, I had not. White houses have invaded north of the border too so next time I return, it will be with a belly full of HE

Image
They don't get many of these in Barra and fortunately, the bloke on the red motorbike who seems to have more spare time on his hands than me (he's always there!) got to see it. He also got to see me run out of beach, cross the road (without hitting any AI vehicles).. do a 180.. look right, look left, look right again and cross back over the road and down the beach to my final resting place

Where to next and in what?? *-)

Hi Dave :hello: ,
What happened to the bus job? Or am I misreading the situation?

Hiya Mike :hello:

Well.. a summary of the situation is here.. http://www.cbfsim.co.uk/cbfs_bb/viewtop ... 5&start=40 below where Tony said he needed a job :) The closer it got to me starting, the less I wanted to do it but I hoped that once I did start.. that feeling would change. Sadly, it didn't and after day 2.. I knew I'd made a faux pas :( We live and learn ;)

Back to that scenery.. does anyone have Scotflight and GenX vol4, The Western Isles? I had a feeling that Scotflight changed the autogen and ground tiles in Scotland but I can't be sure now. As soon as I leave England, the scenery looks decidedly default. Maybe this only happened in FS9 *-) Still.. it's a grand area to fly around and Iain's little hamlets like North Connel are a joy to find ;) I'd like to get Scotland covered in GenX but will hold off.

Not sure where to go next. As I'm currently in Barra, I suppose a trip up the Western Isles would be in order.. perhaps in the Twotter *-)

Hi Dave

Try Benbecula and Stornaway

I've flown many times from Glasgow to Benbecula on business trips in Loganair 340s and the scenery is spectacular. Landing approach from the south is over a hill and is quite good. I did try to get a flight from Glasgow to Barra then on to Benbecula in the Twotter but it was always full.

I've flown it in the virtual world and its not bad at all. I think I have Scotflight and GenX scenery western isles and it is a very good representation.

Happy simming.

Actually I think I'll make my way to the flight sim room and have a go with the Optica.

Regards

John

Hi John :hello:

After I got the Western Isles, I upgraded Scotflight to the version compatible with photo scenery and I can't remember now what it actually did :wall: I've just popped up to Inverness and that looks ok and I know the Western Isles are fine so I guess my memory is somewhere between FS9 and FSX. Scotland sure looks ok.. if not a little 'Tuscany-esque' as the rest of the mainland did before GenX got lobbed on top. Think I'll spend a while up here exploring and adding scenery I've yet to pull off the old install ;)

Dave , now you're talking... an ATP into Benny Rwy 24 , with a 60+ knot westerly , rock solid and smooth with an huge kick-off drift . But takes 2 of us to get the control locks in after landing ! Do the turn round on the rwy nearest to terminal .. start up and reverse back down rwy ; 'cos if we turned tail through the wind ( of that strength ) things would break ( aileron control rods for one ). Don't forget when reversing DON'T use brakes to stop , v.gentle forward thrust .
Stornaway ... short cross rwy SW or W .. but you need a massive headwind to stop an ATP on that one .
Nip across Cape Wrath , dodging the firing ranges ,to the Northern Isles. 500' past the Old Man of Hoy , smooth in a strong Westerly , ruff as old boots in a 10kt Easterly , whilst in the Orkneys , T/G from Westray to Papa Westray , Fair Isle , sea cliffs at Foula , lots more up North . But to finish Sumburgh Rwy 33 ... 500' past the lighthouse at Sumburgh Head, aiming at the quarry , 50' turn over the Sumburgh Head Hotel with red light on , and roll out on Rwy track at about 20' , to kick off drift at 10' . If wind is Southerly you've Rwy 15 with a steepish slide down the side of Fitful Head past the wreck the Braer .....

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=wreck+ ... 18&bih=902

It's good to remember , perchance to dream .. but most all enjoy

Rgds dave f .

PS if you are night stopping , don't forget to get the forecast overnight wind . So to park into wind and tie her down ... 100kts of wind up North isn't a howl more like Thor's hammer hitting the walls .

Golly Moses! Sounds like Dave Farrow's done the area once or twice for real!

Sorry, Dave.
Sorry it didn't work out.
Sorry I missed the item on the forum.
You've also posted about your ear stitches. How's the hearing now, or did I miss that post too?

Have to agree with what you say about texture dimensions. As I said in the posts about Moorabbin, I found that I could get acceptable results in most cases by dropping to 256 colours 512x512. Mind you, that was of course for passing scenery only, not what you expect to see on your piloted aircraft.

Good luck Mister ;)

Sounds excellent Dave

I've not had real weather on (or anything except clear blues with a touch of cloud at FL400) as I've been goofing but I may just add something nasty to spice it up  I'm not sure if there's an ATP for FSX. Seem to remember seeing screenies of a WIP payware jobbie some time ago mind you. Still very new to the twotter so I'd like to get a bit of time in her if poss. Slightly strange engine characteristics. Coupled with the included soundset, it's very difficult to fly using your lugoles if that makes sense. Getting a feel of what's happening through engine pitch isn't easy in this little lady.. the sound and what the model is doing don't seem to be in sync *-) Still.. I've put it down on Barra very smoothly a couple of times already and there are lots more challenges in that part of the world  Loganair/Flybe.. here we come ;)

Mike..
Had the stitches out yesterday.. the external plug is due out this coming Friday. Can't hear JS out of it still but with an internal dissolving plug and an external plug, that's hardly surprising. Very little pain from it at all.. no pills needed ;) Re the bus job.. I should have cut and run a lot earlier but I got to a point where I felt I'd gone too far so I had to try it and hope for the best. Sometimes.. it's better to go with your gut feeling. The buggers have just had a pay rise too!

Dave , sorry to hear about 't Buses , back in the early 80's a really good skipper and operator retired , next thing he's on front page .... couldn't drive a bus or pass his PSV licence .. ......
Think we should take it ,that you're an excellent aviator Dave .
If your Budgie ( 748) is working , then those routes were bread and butter to her , and of course preceded by Viscounts ( more performance challenges ).
By the way Speedbird ( Ian ) was hoping for an early trap yesterday .... perhaps like the airlines he finished early . But not at home base ! When he gets home we might get the low down on night stops in Weymouth or Dorchester ! Here we're looking out at 6'' of snow with more on the hilltops , so it' SnoClo until it melts .

Well.. you wouldn't have thought that had you seen my landing at Barra in the Catalina. The landing was fine.. the stopping wasn't  I have the 780 in FSX but not the Budgie at the mo.. primarily because I'm fed up with doing thumbnails. I'll drag it over though ;)
