Classic British Flight Sim

Hi,

are there any recommendations for a decent Lancaster in FSX?
I know there is one from JustFlight/FCS, Plane-Design and Dave Garwood did one which was originally for Fs2002 plus a patch for FS9.
What do you fly?

DG's was the best Lanc around for a long time and to be honest, it's not bad now in FSX. I have the PD Lancaster which is a belter but.. I've yet to find anyone who can restart the engines on it. I was on the beta team for it too and I can't remember it being this difficult. A recent question from another forum member prompted me to dig it out and bless my soul, I couldn't get it to restart either. No problem if you start with everything turning and burning but beware of restarts!
I've not tried the FCS Lancaster but the modeller is good. The textures were not to everyones liking though.
What else.. yes, Shockwave did a Lancaster too (for FS9). I believe the modeller was the same chap who did the FCS model. The Shockwave model is ok.

If pushed to answer.. if I fly a Lanc these days, it'll probably be the PD Lanc but that is also an FS9 model ported to FSX. The only generic one (as far as I know) is the FCS Lanc. Although I've not tried it.. I have the FCS Wellington. It also has textures that are not to everyones liking and IMHO.. the FD is off the mark. The model loads with bombs (as default) but if you take the bombs off the load in the fuel/payload screen.. the Wellington is off the ground slightly when you return. THAT is not right in any shape or form. Always wondered if the Lancaster does the same

The only one I own is the PD one which, with replacement prop textures, looks fine in FSX. I have its stable mate, the Lancastrian, too. Restarting...I'm going to have to look into that. Can't recall off the top of my head the problem or any solution.

So, it will be DGs one - I had spent to much on payware with all the season sales around thus year.
Thanks for your input. I had taken quite a break from simming but am about to start up again and recollecting/rebuilding my sim world. So I am not really interested in spending to much time in restarting engines when it is that difficult :-)

DG's old model will do fine mate. The fact it doesn't come with a panel or VC doesn't really hurt me any so as long as you have a decent panel and soundset (always important).. there's not much point spending money. I still have it installed in FSX.. a recent addition to my new install. I've modified the airfile slightly so that you can fit a pitot heat switch to stop the ASI failing in poor weather but otherwise.. it's as the version you can get from Flightsim.com If you want the modded airfile, just shout and I'll post it here

Just came across this old thread, and in case anyone is still trying to restart engines on the PD Lanc, try changing the normailsed_starter_torque setting in the [piston_engine] section of aircraft.cfg to something like 0.5. That worked for me.

Absolutely agree that the PD model is still the best Lanc out there, even if the internal textures look a little dated now. I did some beta testing on the follow-on version before it got shelved. That would have been awesome.

I still have the new beta loafing somewhere. As you say.. pity it didn't go further.. that and the York which I also have in some dark corner of an old HD.

I added all the other PD models and textures that I had gathered along the way. It also has a nice VC.

I use two Lancs, but not entirely sure who made them. I'm happy with both.

I feel pretty sure one was an Aeroplane Heaven dambusters model, given away on the PC Pilot coverdisk. I don't remember much about it, but I kept it in my FSX installation until my recent upgrade, so it was good enough.

I think the other one was a BIII, in which you could occupy several crew positions - have to get the "storage hangar" hard drive connected and have a look.

Ah - the AH dambuster was for FS9. Works fine in FSX, though. IIRC someone here was complaining about the shape of the front turret?

The Ross McLennan PD Dambuster Lancaster has a different flight model plus some other changes. Personally I prefer the original PD flight model (with a few tweaks).

As I recall, there were quite a few problems with the AH Lancaster - I don't know if they were ever fixed. Similarly the FCS Lancaster, which I think was the only 'native' FSX Lancaster model. I tried them all, but the PD model is still my preference.

BTW if anyone is looking for a good AI Lancaster for FSX, John Young did one for ACG as part of the BBMF Memorial Flight/Coningsby set. He's also done quite a few more AI warbirds worth checking out.
