I Finally Sucumbed.

Well, never ever did I think I would ever in my life do this but I have!! :OB:  :worried: :hide:

On order at a very costly £14 and summat!!(FSX Gold version) and will be delivered next week.

Will not be buying any add-ons until the new year so will just run it as it comes for now but when I can I am looking at scenery, presently with FS9 I am using REX and Ground Enviroment which I am very happy with as well as other add-ons.

On looking round I have thought of saving up and buying 2 sceneries covering Europe as this is where I do most of my flying these are Ultimate Terrain X – Europe and Ground Environment X: Europe, http://www.google.co.uk/images?hl=en-GB ... sult_group

Have heard that these 2 give very good results but would like to hear from any-one who uses them and give me your thoughts or of other sceneries that will improve the look of FSX. I know Ian uses ORBX and that in itself is brilliant but I at this stage I have to be careful with costs so again, any ideas or suggestions greatly received.

Will not install FSX until I am on leave in 2 weeks time then will run it bare or as it comes until the New Year

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards
Nigel

You (and a few others here) may find this link useful: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... n_US#gid=0

It's a Google spreadsheet I maintain for SOH and lists all the native FSX freeware aircraft currently available. The list contains 298 entries at the present time.

TIP
If you click on 'View' on the top menu and then select 'List' each column will then have a search box above Row 1. This enables you to search by column to refine your results.

For example, if you wanted to find all available de Havilland aircraft then click in the search box in the 'Manufacturer' column and select 'de Havilland' as your choice and it will display only de Havilland aircraft. Select 'All' in the 'Manufacturer' column to reset the lists or alternatively hit the 'Back' button on your browser.

Likewise selecting 'Dave Garwood' in the 'Author/Creator' column will return all Dave's fine pieces of work.

Probably a good idea Nigel

Remember, If you can install FSX into a separate Hard Disk or Separate Partition.

WRT scenery I have both of those addons. In my opinion, REX is an essential. I've recently disabled all of my Ultimate Terrain X as it seemed to be giving me problems. I've had it for years, but disabling has improved the sim for me. I have the UK GenX VFR product and I much prefer this, admittedly, it only covers my England and Wales as they didn't see fit to do Northern Ireland I was a bit miffed. I will get the Southern Scotland one at some point though. The others that I would thoroughly recommend are the UK2000 products for FSX as these, again, in my opinion are superb.

Hi Larry,

Many thanks for that, it will come in very useful and will save time searching on the net.

Ben, not sure how I go about that, might lose or break summat!! :worried: was thinking of just installing into Programs X86 and seeing how it went.

PC is a HP i3 PC with Intel Processor (R) Core TM i3-200 @3.10 GHz 64 bit with 4 GB RAM Graphic Card NVIDIA Geforce GTX 650and hard drive 1GB - does have onboard sound card but quality is good

Kind regards
Nigel

Hi Nigel,

Is there only a C drive? If so then, definitely don't install it in program files, just install it to an FSX directory on the root of the C drive :)

Hi Ben :hello:

OK, let me get this right, I go and click on the C drive then a list of various programmes marked in a spinal list such as Program Folders then Program X86 etc shows up and I click somewhere along that spinal list and make a folder called FSX?

Sorry to sound a bit thick but think that is what you mean?

If I were to install into program folder X86 does that mean it will run slower?

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards
Nigel.

Not really that it will run slow Nigel, its just that Windows 7 (and Windows Vista) treat the Program files directories as system folders meaning they lock them down. The best way to avoid any funnies is to have them on a separate hard disk or partition, but if you only have one, the next best thing to do is change the install path. The easiest way to do this is select "advanced install" when you run the DVD and change the path from C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Flight Simulator X to simply c:\Microsoft Flight Simulator X.

Right, got it at last!!

So basically when installing software some installers ask for you to point to the folder to install to so all I need to do is type in C:\ FSX and it will create its' own folder as 'FSX' and go from there!!

Thanks Ben, you have been a great help.

Kind regards
Nigel.

Spot on Dave, my old one gave up the ghost just over a year now (how time flies when your're having fun)!! 8) so Babs took me down to 'cough' PC World (not on internet) and picked this one up for £399 but.......bought the graphic card later along with a new power output to run it or whatever it is called!!
