PC Specialist

I'm getting annoyed with PC Specialist. As you may know, I bought my new laptop from them a couple of months back and I'm very pleased with it. Anyway, cyberbrat decided that he needed a gaming computer too, as his friends are now playing PC games instead of consoles. So, OK, I 'invested' in a £900 i5 laptop to keep him happy. TBF, his Uni one was looking a bit the worse for wear so there was no point in arguing :(

Within a couple of weeks it had stopped charging due to failure of the socket in the casing, so it had to go back. And then we have all the aggro of the courier not turning up to collect and wasted hours and days - well, we've all been through that. I've got the added aggro of picking it up and dropping it off in Southampton for him as well.

So yesterday, the repaired laptop finally arrived back and sure enough, they'd fixed the socket and it was powering up but would it boot into Windows? Not likely. The BIOS wasn't showing the boot drive so support gave me permission to take the back off and see if it was seated OK. Well, it obviously wasn't and it's going back again tomorrow and will probably need a new motherboard due to some shoddy workmanship. They asked me to take a photo so I thought I'd post a copy here for those that are interested. It's pretty self explanatory and such a waste of my time and their money because somebody couldn't be arsed to put a screw in.

That's a shame Ian, very poor indeed. Here's hoping they sort it out promptly and offer something by way of a "sorry" :|

Very sorry to hear this Ian, particularly as I was one of the people here who recommended PC Specialists to you. I'm sure they will get it sorted for you but yes, as you say, its a lot of hassle sending the thing and waiting indoors for it to turn up. Perhaps if you send them the URL to this thread in an email, they will see that a bit of bad publicity is fomenting. They strike me as a company who guard their reputation closely.

Look on the bright side - you could be dealing with PC World.

Aaaaargh!

To be fair, support are very helpful and answer the phone quickly and I'm always ready to accept that sh*t happens. But when it happens two or three times and then is compounded by a lazy scallywag, then it's time for a little rant. And I know that a good rant is always appreciated here :agree:

'Little rant'. That reminds me of a funny BOAC story from way back when. Who remembers Charlie Drake, the comedian? An obnoxious little git, by all account. He was travelling on a BOAC flight and tried to pull one of our most aloof senior hosties. His chat up line was 'What would you say to a little f*ck?'. She patted him on the head and replied 'Hello little f*ck'.

I've forgiven everybody now  The courier has been on the ball lately and PC Specialist did a very quick priority turnaround on the second repair. They put a new motherboard in cyberbrat's laptop and it all seems to be working fine.

It would have been better if they hadn't been a bit sloppy in the first place, but everybody makes mistakes and it's only how a company deals with them that shows their customer care qualities. In this experience, PCS have been readily contactable by phone and email and have made instant decisions and followed up efficiently. As they also offer excellent value for money, I'll put them back on my recommended list

Ian :)

Charlie Drake should have stuck with 'Hello my darlins'.

Glad to see PC Specialists have resolved the issue, Ian. As you say, the measure of a company is what they do when things go wrong.

You better believe it, try dealing with the soon to be extinct Comet about a duff microwave.

Given previous experience we have already picked up a replacement microwave from Lidl. No point in hanging around when an offer is on. Got a decent cordless hammer drill from Lidl for my daughter's house move last month too.

Vorsprung durch thingie.
