Thanks, Garry. There have been suggestions for a while that MS were rejecting calls from people trying to get telephone authorisation for re-installs of FSX. So there was a suspicion that this might become official soon.
The problem is that if the software limits the number of times (or new hardware) you can install before needing phone activation, then that is your absolute limit and it becomes useless junk. If FSX is then unavailable to you, your options are FS9, P3D or X-Plane. If you've got FSX aircraft or scenery that you want to take forward then P3D will be the only future option (and that's not guaranteed!) and realistically you will still need FSX as there are not many add-ons that work flawlessly in P3D unless they are designed to.
It is inevitable that MS will stop production of FSX as it can't sell it without support, surely. So I'd recommend that anybody who thinks that they might, possibly, need a copy of FSX some time in the future should get over to Amazon and pick up a copy of FSX Gold while it's still available and cheap (£12.40). I've just ordered one to back up my original.

I would have thought MS stopped producing FS.X a long time ago and the recent sales were just stock??

Fear not. If the product is still available for retail sale (and it is) they must continue to activate it for up to 3 years. This is not an end to activation, its an end to support

After my motherboard cpu swap the other week FSX needed activation, just did the key insert and online activation went through OK...

It's still available to buy from MS online store so I guess they're still knocking them out! But I'm not sure how that stands with withdrawing support
My thought about activation was concerning telephone activation in the event that automatic online activation was unavailable. I read a post on a forum somewhere a few weeks back from a guy who couldn't activate online for some reason, tried to activate by phone and was told the product was no longer supported and that they couldn't do it. I can't find the post now, obviously
Maybe I worry too much

(or maybe you lot don't worry enough

)
