Google Maps - Bicycling

Those lovely people at Google have updated Maps to include cycle routes and cycle-friendly roads. This might be a useful tool for the cyclists and would-be cyclists among us. It looks a bit like this (this is Bristol):
Meanwhile, off the map, I managed to sneak in a few miles today before the rain and found more poppies.

The roads might be friendly (no pot holes, maybe) but the drivers on 'em may well be a different matter!!

We are honoured???? to have the Olympic cycle time trials and road races coming past our house. How they will manage on our pot-holed Surrey highways, I can't imagine.
The roads will be closed to all but emergency traffic, and some people wont be able to get to work. Businesses will lose thousands in takings, with no compensation paid.
Honoured? Yes, but at a huge cost.

Not MY expression, Chris. Google's!
Personally, I don't think bikes have any place on roads in the 21st century. How can it possibly be safe to mix unstable, low speed, lightweight, pedal powered machines with trucks, buses and cars travelling at five or six times the speed? The only way to reduce the possibility of accidents is to narrow the speed difference. Either legislate for all motor vehicles to drive at 20 mph or all pedal powered vehicles to keep to a minimum of 60 mph
And, no, I'm not entirely serious

However If you look at the accident statistics for cyclists, the odds of being killed or seriously injured (over 3,000 in GB last year) make road riding an incredibly dangerous thing to do. I can't understand why anyone would take such a huge gamble with their life! Mud, scratches, nettle stings and the odd broken nose are my main concerns off-road

I'll tempered, Joe? Moi? Where did you get that idea? I'm always happy! There's nothing I'll-tempered in my post, is there? In fact there are three laughing smileys, a smiling smiley and a winking smiley! It's just comments is all. It doesn't bother me because I avoid riding on the road.
... but then again, some of those roadies do piss me off on country roads when I can't get past them

(oops)

As someone who doesn't own a car and with the prospect of no bus service in our village cycling is a necessity for me, but I agree the roads are insanely dangerous!
If I travel thirty miles in a car I very rarely see an ill tempered cyclist but travel the same distance on a bike and every other motorist would like to run me over, and would do if they had the balls, which, luckily, none of them have up until now!

Well played Ian.
Moi.

.. indeed.
Rob,
Be careful out there. some people only have balls when they're behind the wheel of a car.
Now - if you'll excuse me, I'm having a leg cramp that's trying to kill me. And I need to have a little whine before I go to sleep.
